Its purpose is to ensure that those who use, manage and provide care in the NHS have good quality information to make evidence-based decisions about health technologies. The HTA programme funds research on the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of health technologies.

This includes restaurants, cafes, takeaways and any online businesses that sell food for takeaway or home delivery. Consumption trends-which foods are people consuming, where and how? What people consume still falls short of dietary guidelines. While diets are slowly changing, people are generally not meeting the standards recommended for a healthy diet in the UK or internationally (Figure 1). The UK population continues to consume too much saturated fat and not enough fruit, vegetables and fibre.

Research paper thumbnail of Mental Health Retrosight: Understanding the Returns From Research (Lessons From Schizophrenia): Policy Report

Rand health quarterly, 2014

This study examines the impacts arising from neuroscience and mental health research going back 2... more This study examines the impacts arising from neuroscience and mental health research going back 20-25 years, and identifies attributes of the research, researchers or research setting that are associated with translation into patient benefit, in the particular case of schizophrenia. The study combined two methods: forward-tracing case studies to examine where scientific advances of 20 years ago have led to impact today; and backward-tracing perspectives to identify the research antecedents of today's interventions in schizophrenia. These research and impact trails are followed principally in Canada, the UK and the USA. The headline findings are as follows: The case studies and perspectives support the view that mental health research has led to a diverse and beneficial range of academic, health, social and economic impacts over the 20 years since the research was undertaken.Clinical research has had a larger impact on patient care than basic research has over the 20 years since ...

A new approach to production of colour micrographs is demonstrated together with some typical uses of the environmental mode of SEM. A combination of the outputs of two backscattered electron (BSE) detectors alone or in combination with the outputs from a gaseous detector device can form images corresponding to particular aspects of a given specimen. Two or more of these images can be superimposed on to the same colour print to produce a colour micrograph.

Research paper thumbnail of Preventing Emergency Readmissions to Hospital: A Scoping Review

Rand health quarterly, 2012

This article reviews the evidence and potential for use of "emergency readmissions within 28... more This article reviews the evidence and potential for use of "emergency readmissions within 28 days of discharge from hospital" as an indicator within the NHS Outcomes Framework. It draws on a rapid review of systematic reviews, complemented by a synopsis of work in four countries designed to better understand current patterns of readmissions and the interpretation of observed patterns. Reviewed studies suggest that between 5 percent and 59 percent of readmissions may be avoidable. Studies are highly heterogeneous, but based on the evidence reviewed, about 15 percent up to 20 percent may be considered reasonable although previous authors have advised against producing a benchmark figure for the percentage of readmissions that can be avoided. The majority of published studies focus on clinical factors associated with readmission. Studies are needed of NHS organisational factors which are associated with readmission or might be altered to prevent readmission. The introduction ...
