A significant strength is its geographical reach, with contributions on Africa, Brazil, Northern Ireland, India, China and the US. However, it is also broad in terms of the perspectives covered. The 12 Chapters bring together authors from a wide range of disciplines and cover an impressive array of themes under the umbrella of conflict with the focus on gender. Theoretical discussions are anchored in particular case studies of women in the military, women asylum seekers, women and resistance and women and private and public violence, while the role of the state both in sanctioning and using violence against women is explored in a number of chapters.

Women’s – especially married women’s – relation to land often has implications for their status as members of a social and political collective. Moreover, land remains an important livelihood resource in many societies; its importance is likely to increase in time of economic crisis. The current global trend is for women to take more responsibility in agricultural production where they do not already predominate (FAO 2005).

The question of diversity is an aspect of the Widening Participation policy. This project set out to explore student understanding of the concept and reality of diversity, and to research views about the impact of diversity on teaching and learning and other aspects of student experience. The intent was to utilise the different vantage points of the two lead researchers (in social and natural science disciplines) to compare student views across two faculties. It was hoped that discussions with students in focus groups would provide the opportunity for a variety of different viewpoints to be expressed, and for different aspects of ‘diversity’ to be explored

It explores the often overlooked question of casual women workers and labour organizing in the East African export horticultural sector. This article draws on primary action research and looks more particularly at horticultural farms in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. It demonstrates that by putting a focus on the needs of women workers, feminist labour agitation has promoted new forms of labour organization. It highlights successes, barriers and challenges for the future. Introduction This article focuses on the organization of women working on a casual basis on agribusiness farms. It discusses the case of women workers in East African horticulture, a hitherto little-researched group in a sector often overlooked in social r...

Beginning with definitions, it moves on to discuss debates over political intent and economic outcomes of (redistributionist) reforms as well as three current issues: gender, land rights and land reforms; neoliberal ‘reforms’ and land titling and land reforms’ contemporary relevance. It concludes that land and agrarian reforms continue to be of much importance for poverty alleviation, food security and sustainable agriculture, particularly in a world framed by neoliberal policies. keywords agrarian reform ◆ food security ◆ gender and land rights ◆ land reform ◆ land redistribution ◆ land rights ◆ rural classes

It argues that sexual harassment is fostered both by coercive labour conditions within global value chains and by existing hierarchical gender relations. The research finds that harassment is widespread, that many lack a vocabulary to describe or discuss this, and that female casual and temporary workers are most likely to be targeted. Action research coupled with organisation of workers, however, has been effective in giving ‘voice’ to those suffering harassment: this is a first step in a feminist labour mobilisation and policy formulation. Procedures against sexual harassment are beginning to be formulated: a key concern is implementation. Addressing sexual harassment is central in ensuring the security of working people, particularly the most marginalised.

It analyses debates over political intent and the contradictory economic outcomes of (redistributionist) reforms: these decrease some class inequalities but hold potential for further differentiation in the countryside. It also takes up three current issues: gender, land rights and land reforms, neoliberal ‘reforms’, titling and land ‘grabs’, and agrarian reforms’ contemporary relevance in the context of globalising trends. It concludes that land and agrarian reforms continue to be of much importance to poverty alleviation, food security and sustainable agriculture, particularly in a world framed by neoliberal policies.
