Uniqueness and rarity of the lesion is evident from the literature. Here we are presenting a case report of dentinogenic ghost cell tumor which clinically presented as an asymptomatic gingival swelling in the maxillary anterior region along with its diagnosis, management and review of literature

However, larger defects often present a surgical difficulty and may necessitate free flaps. However, in the repair of such large defects, multiple local flaps may prove to be a viable and satisfactory alternative. Case Report We resected a lesion 4*5cm size, quadrilateral in shape, on the left ala of the nose, extending on to the dorsum, left infra orbital and malar regions along with a wide margin of normal tissue. Reconstruction of the resultant defect was done using multiple local flaps namely the paramedia n forehead flap, the lateral cheek rotation flap & the platysma myocutaneous flap. Discussion Facial defects can be managed with the correct choice of local flap. Local flaps being easy to harvest and handle, provide good results due to good matching of the skin in terms of colour, texture, and thickness. Conclusion Our case, throws light, on t...

Segmental resection of the mandible may cause considerable functional, esthetic, and social probl... more Segmental resection of the mandible may cause considerable functional, esthetic, and social problems. Immediate reconstruction of the mandible is, therefore, preferred, with the aim to achieve restoration of function and esthetics. Over the past decade, the use of reconstructive plates alone for the reconstruction of large mandible defects has essentially been replaced by the use of osseous microsurgical free flaps, of which the free fibula flap has emerged as the primary choice among surgeons. The free fibula flap has improved the functional and cosmetic outcomes after reconstruction of extensive mandible defects

In those instances where no single aetiological factor can be pinned down consecutively, blood borne microorganisms get attracted to an area of necrosis and inflammation may be a factor. Glossal abscess should be treated promptly following the same guidelines as in other infectious conditions

They are considered to be hamartomatous malformations rather than true neoplasms and are generally asymptomatic. It is considered as a developmental anomaly resulting from the growth of completely differentiated epithelial and mesenchymal cells that give rise to ameloblasts and odontoblasts. These tumours are formed of enamel and dentin, but they can also have a variable amount of cementum and pulp tissue. Odontomes manifest in various ways, such as impacted or unerupted tooth, associated with infection and as swellings in oral cavity. We are presenting a case series were odontomes have clinically manifested in various ways. KDJ 2013; Vol. 36, no. 1: 51-53

Failure of ventilation after nasal intubation is an emergency and this paper aims at pointing out an unusual cause for nasal tube obstruction. Surgeons and anaesthesiologists should keep the possibility of obstruction by avulsed turbinate bones while dealing with such emergency situations. This paper details such an occurrence, the reasons and how the situation was managed. Key words: nasotracheal tube intubation, nasotracheal tube obstruction, ventilatory failure, inferior turbinat

Research paper thumbnail of The Versatility in the Use of Buccal Fat Pad in the Closure of Oro-antral Fistulas

Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery, 2014

Oroantral communications (OAC) are probable surgical complications of dentoalveolar procedures. O... more Oroantral communications (OAC) are probable surgical complications of dentoalveolar procedures. OACs 2 mm in diameter or smaller are likely to close spontaneously without the need for any surgical intervention. However, OACs 3 mm in diameter or larger, or OACs associated with maxillary or periodontal inflammation, may persist, and surgical closure is recommended. Various surgical techniques have been suggested for the closure of oroantral defects. We have found the technique of two layer closure with buccal fat pad (BFP) and buccal mucoperiosteum quite useful for closure of chronic Oroantral fistula (OAF) and this article reports a case of OAF in the left first molar region of a 50 year old male, which has been closed successfully with this technique. Buccal fat pad is a pedicled locally available flap which has its own blood supply and hence can be used with great efficacy in closure of OAF. This paper aims to elaborate the surgical details of this technique and its usefulness in closure of chronic OAF.

International journal of oral and maxillofacial surgery, 2003

Clinical case records of 76 patients under the age of 45 years treated for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral tongue were retrospectively analysed to calculate the survival rates and the predictors of survival. The overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) at 5 year were 78.0% and 57.4% respectively. Tumour status, pathological node status, surgical clearance, the selection of appropriate treatment, type of primary and neck surgery, were found to significantly influence the survival rates. Young patients with SCC of the oral tongue were seen to have a comparable outcome and prognosis compared to that in older patients.

Research paper thumbnail of Potential for osseous regeneration of platelet-rich plasma--a comparative study in mandibular third molar sockets

This study utilized homologous platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of third molar extraction sockets in a total of fourteen human subjects, who were randomly assigned into one control and one test group, each comprising of seven members. Clinical parameters like pain on palpation, number of analgesic tablets consumed, swelling, degree of mouth opening, and condition of mucosa overlying the surgical site were assessed at intervals of 1,3,5,7,9,12, and 16 weeks post operatively. The margins between the socket and surrounding bone, radiopacity of bone filling the socket, and presence oftrabecular bone formation were evaluated simultaneously. Soft tissue healing differed significantly between the two groups, with the test group exhibiting better results. Radiographic evidence of bone formation was visible as early as I week in test subjects. It was conc...

Most gingival lesions arise due to local irritating factors. The case presented share dramatic clinical pictures and findings of a long-standing fibrous gingival lesion. A massive growth of 6¥7 cm in size and 5 years duration from the maxillary left posterior gingival region in a 64-year-old female causing severe facial disfigurement is presented. Lesion was characterized by the central core of woven bone formation. The article discusses on the clinical findings of peripheral ossifying fibroma and stresses on the unrestricted growth potential of this interesting lesion.

This proforma is aimed at residents in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, to help them during their initial phase, in evaluating and treating impacted mandibular third molars. This comprehensive proforma will help them to analyse third molar impactions, assess and anticipate the difficulty, judge intraoperative problems they might encounter, and evaluate the patient at post operative follow-up.

Their potential to function as a biocompatible resorbable drug delivery system is being explored. The present study is a preliminary investigation into the efficacy of these indigenously developed nanoporous materials as vehicles for therapeutic agents. An in vitro experiment was conducted with the goal of assessing this material and comparing it with a commercially available gentamicin-loaded polymethylmethacrylate cement. The drug-eluting characteristics of gentamicin bone cement and indigenously designed nanoporous bioceramic granules were analyzed spectrophotometrically and compared. Regression analysis was done. The first 5 days saw the elute from both samples containing drug concentrations >100 μg/g. Both samples exhibit a high initial-burst release, which is ideal for prophylactic purposes. Drug eluent levels for both materials were >100 μg/g, which is sufficient for bactericidal activity.
