Making this choice is their right. Many patients view surgery as a last option, rather than their first choice in treatments. The need for a surgery can be a confusing and frightening prospect and people may have many questions. Robotic assisted surgery has a great future in India, but majority people are not aware about robotic surgery. Purpose: To focus on the level of anxiety and perception among robotic surgery patients and it has also identified the need for a video assisted intervention for patients undergoing robotic surgery. Methods: A video assisted intervention on perception(perception rating scale-20 items) and anxiety (State Anxiety Inventory-20 items) among study participants(n=30) undergoing robotic surgery were selected by purposive non probability sampling by means of self administered questionnaire. Results The perception mean differen...

Anxiety and pain are the common problems usually experienced by the patients with cancer beginning from the diagnosis to the treatment part. There is a growing body of research documenting the effects of many alternative treatment modalities in cancer care, one among which is the music therapy. Research has proved that engaging in the music listening or music composing activities will reduce the overall health ailmnents which will arise due to the treatment part and increases the quality of life in terms of comfort, relaxation in patients with cancer.

We conducted a survey to assess the current trends in management of prolactinomas during pregnancy. Methods: A case-based electronic questionnaire was sent in January 2011 to all practicing endocrinologists, in four Canadian provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia with three cases of varying severity; ranging from a microprolactinomas to a large macroprolactinomas compressing the optic chiasm. Result: There was a considerable diversity among endocrinologists with regards to monitoring and managing prolactinomas during pregnancy. In case of microprolactinomas, 94% of specialists would discontinue dopamine agonist (DA) therapy upon confirmation of pregnancy, 79% would discontinue serum prolactin measurement during pregnancy, and 94% would not perform routine pituitary imaging in the absence of new symptoms where...

We studied the effect of valsartan on adipokine genes resistin ( rstn) and fasting-induced adipose factor ( fiaf) using obese and diabetic ob/ob mice. In addition to visceral and subcutaneous fat, rstn and fiaf mRNA levels were also measured in several other tissues known to express these adipokines, including the pituitary, cerebral cortex and hypothalamus. The significant findings were that (a) fiaf gene expression was elevated two- to fourfold in visceral and subcutaneous fat from ob/ob mice, compared with lean controls; (b) the increase in fiaf mRNA in subcutaneous, but not visceral, fat from ob/ob mice was returned to lean control levels following 2 weeks of valsartan treatment; (c) fiaf expression was reduced in the hypothalamus, but not in the cortex or pituitary, of ob/ob mice; (d...

Published in 1997, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, has been translated into more than 70 languages due to its inviting plot, humorous style and themes, warmly welcomed by the fans all over the world. Under this circumstance, this paper analyzes and explores the intersection of imagination and reality in the book from the perspective of magic realism. It is well acknowledged that magic realism is an approach to reflect reality by the dreamland generated from magic, in which the magic is a method when the essence is the reality. This paper first introduces the research objective, the first book of Harry Potter series in terms of the reputation it enjoyed and most importantly, the outstanding British novelist, J. K. Rowling. Combined with the characteristics of magic realism, it discusses about the intersection of imagination and reality in the portrayal of characters, the layout of the scene. Closely related to the attachment of reality from the perspective of magic realism, it finds out and analyzes the values of literal life that the writer intends to convey in the novel. This paper not only points out the shadow of reality in the settings of characters as well as scenes, but also finds out the values that the writer wants to convey like rebellion, the attitude towards desire and the power of love, which would enhance the interpretation of the application of magic realism in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Research paper thumbnail of Impact of admission serum glucose level on in-hospital outcomes following coronary artery bypass grafting surgery

Canadian Journal of Cardiology, 2010

I t has been confirmed that serum glucose (SG) levels are independently associated with both shor... more I t has been confirmed that serum glucose (SG) levels are independently associated with both short-and long-term outcomes of patients with cardiovascular disease (1). In the setting of an acute myocardial infarction, hyperglycemia enhances the risk of morbidity and mortality independent of the patients' diabetes status (2). Hyperglycemia is also highly predictive of the occurrence of left ventricular failure and cardiac death in patients with acute coronary syndrome (3,4), and is associated with larger infarct size, worse functional recovery and higher long-term mortality in patients undergoing reperfusion with either thrombolysis or percutaneous coronary intervention (5,6). In patients undergoing cardiac surgery, there is also evidence that both intraoperative (7,8) and postoperative (9) SG levels predict the occurrence of adverse postoperative events. Tight control of intra-and postoperative SG levels with insulin increases survival and decreases the incidence of ischemic events in diabetic patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery (10). In contrast to the known importance of intra-and/or postoperative SG levels on the outcomes of CABG surgery, there exists a paucity of data regarding the potential impact of preoperative or admission SG level on the outcomes of cardiac surgery. We hypothesized that an elevated preoperative or admission SG level would be an independent clInIcal studIes

To explore whether this knowledge was being applied in clinical practice. The authors conducted a chart audit of all subjects with an acute myocardial infarction admitted to the coronary care unit of a tertiary health care centre in Nova Scotia between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2000. Information was obtained from a computerized database as well as individual chart review. Treatment of patients with and without diabetes was specifically compared. There were 447 total admissions. One hundred and twenty-eight had diabetes mellitus and the majority of these (93%) had type 2 diabetes. Most patients (54%) sustained a non-Q wave infarction and 77% had either thrombolytic therapy or cardiac catheterization. Mean glucose on admission and discharge was 11.32 mmol/L and 9.86 mmol/L, respectively. Diabetes was managed conservatively among 98%, and only...
