At the same time, tourist movements have spread geographically to reach practically all countries of the globe, becoming for many of them an important economic sector in terms of income generation, foreign exchange earnings and employment creation. Awareness about sustainability issues—which referred originally to the natural environment but now also covers the social, economic and cultural spheres as well as the built environment—also developed significantly over those 30 years. Today, most governments, international development agencies, trade associations, academic institutions and non-governmental organizations acknowledge that, without sustainability, there cannot be development that generates benefits to all stakeholders, solves serious and urgent problems such as extreme poverty, and pres...

The assessment was conducted between 2008 and 2011 by over 200 scientists, experts, and members of Native groups, and brings together the latest knowledge about the changing state of each component of the arctic 'cryosphere' (the part of the Earth's surface that is seasonally or perennially frozen).

ABSTRACT. Our societies are faced with major societal challenges alongside a growing awareness of these issues through various citizen initiatives. Taking this perspective seriously implies thinking about the required transformations in the form of non-performant processes. Citizen participation is clearly invoked at the level of public research policies. The social sciences can benefit from pragmatic and socio-constructivist approaches for the development of participation methodologies, based on the premise of egalitarian cooperation between the stakeholders of a research collective. This special issue deepens the methodological frameworks of participatory action research based on three criteria: identified places, specific temporalities and positions of cooperation. This survey is an extension of new forms of open and/or responsible research and innovation, with explicit reference to joint work with civil society on the themes related to socio-ecological transition.

Here we critically assess how often and efficiently two main drivers of global change have been simultaneously integrated into research, with the aim of providing practical solutions for better integration in the future. We focus on the integration of climate change (CC) and land‐use change (LUC) when studying changes in species distributions.Location Global. Methods We analysed the peer‐reviewed literature on the effects of CC and LUC on observed changes in species distributions, i.e. including species range and abundance, between 2000 and 2014.Results Studies integrating CC and LUC remain extremely scarce, which hampers our ability to develop appropriate conservation strategies. The lack of CC–LUC integration is likely to be a result of insufficient recognition of the co‐occurrence of CC and LUC at all scales, covariation and interactions between CC a...
