After the entry into force of Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC the member states of European Union (... more After the entry into force of Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC the member states of European Union (EU) turned towards other technologies for waste treatment and management, such as mechanical-biological treatment of waste (MBT) in order to meet the obligations related to the reduction of the amount of landfilled biodegradable waste. This paper presents an analysis of the waste management in Poland in terms of the current regulations and requirements of the EU and achievement of the mechanicalbiological treatment of municipal solid waste based on operational data from two waste treatmend plants with different degrees of segregation and aerobic waste stabilization applied technologies: one MBT plant with aerobic stabilization in open chambers with forced aeration of remaining municipal solid waste after separation at source and a manual sorting line (KKO-100 technology), and the other MBT plant with mechanical and manual sorting and aerobic stabilization of biodegradable waste in a dynamic system in a closed hall in bioreactors (BIOFIX system). Based on the mass balance analysis of the waste and the technological and economic parameters, the efficiency of the mechanical-biological treatment of the waste was determined. The results showed that the waste sorting technology within the framework of MBT had a significant effect on the final efficiency of resource recovery and waste disposal reduction.

Agricultural policy in the European Union at Community level, as well as in the member states, in... more Agricultural policy in the European Union at Community level, as well as in the member states, increasingly emphasises the issue of sustainable agriculture. The pursuit of climate neutrality requires a reduction in emissions from agricultural sources. Above all, it is necessary to fully exploit the potential of agricultural and forestry areas to increase carbon sequestration in biomass and soil, optimise systems for the storage, transport and use of livestock manure, and significantly improve energy efficiency and increase the share of renewable energy in plant and livestock production. Rural areas, and in particular agriculture, are also seen as one of the main and important sources of pollution and eutrophication of water. Determining the correct way to assess the degree of sustainability of farms requires objective and feasible to determine measures and indicators of socioeconomic-environmental sustainability and a lot of analysis, methodological and practical research. To date, no uniform set of sustainability indicators has been developed and their selection depends on data availability.

The current goals to achieve the said requirements are set in the VI update of the National Urban Wastewater Treatment Program (KPOŚK) and has to be achieved to 2027. The article presents the status of water and wastewater management in the districts of Lubuskie Voivodeship, Poland in 2021, in relation to year 2017. The degree of water supply and sewerage system, as well as wastewater systems management in individual agglomerations of Lubuskie Voivodeship are defined.

Assessment of water quality is important because of located at the estuary part of the river water intake surface for Zielona Góra . The water from the initial reaches has been qualified to III class of water quality based on the achieved results. According to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment from 22 October 2014 on the classification of surface water bodies and environmental quality standards for priority substances (OJ 2014 pos. 1482), samples of water taken from Obrzyca classify this part of river to II class of quality. According to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 27 November 2002 on the requirements to be met by surface water used for public supply of water intended for human consumption (OJ 2002 No. 204, item. 1728), Obrzyca's water belong to A3 category of water taken to consume by people.

Yet, the mass implementation of VFCWs in urbanized areas first needs improvement of a few design drawbacksamong them, the control of infection hazard is of primary importance. Therefore, in this study, the possibility of mitigation of the VFCW-derived infection hazard was assessed, through analysis of bacteriostatic properties of top filtration layer materials, according to clinical experiences based on "safe" antimicrobial surfaces. The experiment was carried out on a daily operating VFCW. Coliform bacteria survival rates were measured for known VFCW construction materials such as Pinus bark, gravel, slag, charcoal and LECA. The calculated die-off rates expressed as 12-h first-order inactivation coefficients ranged between 6.91 h À1 (slag/summer) and 0.58 h À1 (Pinus bark/autumn). The obtained die-off curves showed charcoal, Pinus bark and LECA to have little bacteriostatic propertieseven occasionally providing conditions promoting the growth of the coliform population. Meanwhile, slag and gravel were strictly inhibiting bacteria growth, reducing the population up to 99% within the first 3 h of contact time. The research showed that it is possible to significantly mitigate the infection hazard of VFCW by means of proper top-layer substrate material, similar or equal to slag or gravel.

Most often, in order to remove xenobiotics that are difficult to degrade biochemically, advanced oxidation processes and photochemical processes with or without catalysts are used. The efficiency of these processes can be supported by the flow of electric current through the solution being purified in a special system. This paper presents the theoretical foundations of processes such as electrocoagulation, electroflotation, and advanced chemical and photochemical oxidation supported by electric power. Among the processes where the Fenton’s reagent is the oxidant, the electro-Fenton and photo-electro-Fenton processes are also described. This information is supplemented with examples of the use of these processes for removal/degradation of selected organic compounds such as pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuti...
