Although there are many developed mathematical models and heuristics to solve this problem, simulation is still one of the most popular and widely used techniques used in both assembly line balancing and manufacturing system design. In this study, 22-inch LCD TV assembly line that consists of 47 tasks is handled, and the line balancing is performed by using two different approaches. The results of each approach are compared by using simulation on an experimental basis.

The velocity distribution of the dark matter particles on the outskirts of the Solar System remai... more The velocity distribution of the dark matter particles on the outskirts of the Solar System remains unclear. We suggest to determine it using experimentally found properties of the oldest halo objects. Indeed, the oldest halo stars and globular clusters form a collisionless system, as well as dark matter particles do, and they evolved in the same gravitational field. If we accept this analogy, we can show that the velocity distribution of the dark matter particles should be highly anisotropic and have a sharp maximum near υ ∼ 500 km/s. The distribution is totally different from the Maxwell one. We analyze the influence of the distribution function on the results of dark matter detection experiments. It is found that the direct detection signal should differ noticeably from the one calculated from the Maxwell distribution with υ ≃ 220 km/s, which is conventional for direct detection experiments (the ratio depends on the detector properties and typically falls within the range between 6 and 0.2). Moreover, the sharp distinction from the Maxwell distribution can be very essential to the observations of dark matter annihilation.

Farming and farming business among countries triggered most of the historical revolutions directly or indirectly. Besides, all of the modern and technological innovations directly were adapted to the farming systems. In a large part of the world, the solar energy is never enough for farming all kind of vegetables and fruits during the whole year. At the same time, compensating the solar energy by using lighting, heating and other systems 7/24 during the whole year for farming is not economically enough as business. Like all other businesses, the main aim of farming business is also increasing productivity by decreasing expenses. With the introduction of information technologies into every moment of our lives, taking the advantage of intelligent systems has become more important to achieve these goals. Also, information technologies and intelligent farming systems have gained increasing importance with today’s consumption patterns. In this study, we aim to propose an evaluation model for the intelligent farming systems by using fuzzy sets theory and simulation technique.

Although the multi-criteria decision-making methods provide decision makers the necessary tools, they have differences in terms of the assumptions and fundamental theory. Hence, selecting the right decision-making method is at least as important as making the decision. TOPSIS (Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method, which is one of the most widely used multi-criteria decision-making methods, has gained attention of researchers and thus various improved versions of the method have been proposed. This study considers the conventional TOPSIS method and experimentally displays the underlying reasons of the lacks of the conventional TOPSIS method by using a simulation technique. Detailed experimental analysis based on simulation with an application is used to reveal theoretical fundamentals of the TOPSIS method to better understand it and contribute to its improvement.

Design/methodology/approach Network data envelopment analysis method with fuzzy data is used for performance measurement which considers the sub-process efficiency simultaneously together with the overall efficiency and also the uncertainty included in input–output data. Findings A real-life application of the proposed model is presented for Turkey. The application results show the efficiency scores of ten branches according to each sub-process and also the overall system. Although the obtained results are case specific, the application results indicate that the inefficient branches can achieve efficiency either by decreasing circulation ratio input for human resources sub-process or by increasing closed complaint output or by decreasing open complaint output for customer relationship management sub-process. Performance evaluation is an important and complex process that requires flexible and analytic methods while handling the multidimensionality of the problem. This study presents a hybrid multi-criteria performance evaluation model for banking sector which combines two multi-criteria decision making methods that are simulation-integrated hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets-based analytic hierarchy process method to determine the importance level of each criterion according to the decision makers' subjective judgements and grey relational analysis method to rank bank regions according to their performance values. The presented model is based on both probability theory and fuzzy sets theory and thus better represents all the dimensions of the uncertainty inherent in decision making process. A real-life application of the proposed performance evaluation model for a private bank operating in agricultural banking sector in Turkey is also given to illustrate the effectiveness and the applicability of the model.

There have been developed approaches which are based on either fuzzy sets theory or probability theory to model the inherent uncertainty and imprecision in the pairwise comparison process of analytic hierarchy process (AHP). This study proposes a hybrid approach that integrates fuzzy sets theory and simulation technique into AHP method to better represent the uncertainty in decision-making process. The aim of the proposed approach is to benefit the advantages of both probability theory and fuzzy sets theory which may provide a new paradigm for modeling uncertainty in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). An illustrative example is also presented to show the applicability of the proposed approach.

This study presents a simulation based multi-criteria model for the general evaluation of renewable energy alternatives. This model integrates Monte Carlo simulation technique with Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) method to be able to represent the variability and the uncertainty inherent in the data. Simulation based GRA method is used for ranking the renewable energy alternatives which are solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal energy. The effectiveness and the applicability of the proposed model is also illustrated with an application in which 5 renewable energy alternatives are evaluated according to 12 criteria.

In this regard, the Iranian food industry, which includes many specific features, including the vast domestic and regional consumption market, was considered by the researchers in this study. The purpose of this research is to investigate and identify variables and to explain the effective factors on the individual entrepreneurship process in Iran's food industry. In the first phase of the study, the survey team carried out semi-structured interviews with 13 experts in the domain of food industries. In the second phase of the study, a questionnaire based on the Grey DEM ATEL method is available to experts for determining priorities and interrelationships between the factors. Based on the research data, paired comparison analysis questionnai has been used. The findings of the research show that among the six categoriesindividual, personality, occupation, food industry environment, institutional, and environmental factorsthe environmental ones were the most influential factors. Also, the individual ones were the most influenced factors and at the same time the most important factor among the ones influencing the process of entrepreneurship in Iran's food industries.
