This is not only because of the loss of life and the associated disruptions. It is also a tragedy because the events reveal how frail any peace can be, how futile unsubstantiated expressions of inter-ethnic harmony voiced by government authorities can be, and how enduring the yoke of Empire can be. For these reasons, the wider connotations of the conflict are of concern not only for those connected with Soviet affairs but also for all fellow human beings. In particular, those concerned with the Third World will find several parallels with other histories and other destinies. The criterion used for selecting some thoughts on the conflict was to seek out their relevance for compiling comparative data rather than for analytical perspectives, despite the interesting implications for the latter. For this purpose too, issues have not been placed in any implicit theoretical framework other than one from which the deduction is made that particular aspects of the Soviet system (called 'structures' for the sake of simplicity) are directly related to the sentiments which have been expressed by the protagonists.

This is not the difference, familiar to social anthropologists, between the notions of ‘applied’ and ‘pure’ social science. There is only one compelling choice here which will avoid creating an artiŽcial barrier between the scholar and the real world. This necessary involvement may be seen as an invitation to engage in ‘social engineering’ and it is not in everyone’s gift to do so wisely. Yet there is still a guiding principle in genocide studies, which is the obligation upon the writer to highlight for his or her readers those areas which, in the writer’s judgement, should be carefully considered in order to create conditions for genocide never to take place again. And again. And again. Your work risks having dire consequences, when you see that writings of a single scholar, which catch the eye of opportunist political authorities, can lead to disaster, and there are many examples. So you require the sense of realism needed to insist adamantly that your own approach be taken into consideration not alone, but in conjunction with that of colleagues. Otherwise, perhaps the whole venture is too perilous. If you are unwilling to be in the Žring line, then genocide research may not be for you. Ethnic and racial studies, in this Želd, form a raw and

The book is a collection of reports presented specifically in the section.
The authors try to show how the structure of postmodern society is changing against the backdrop of increasing technological progress and civilizational changes, how horizontal connections through social networks are expanding, and what prospects anthropology has; the book deals with "cyberethnography" as a modern method of scientific research.
