The position of the tongue while pronouncing a definite vowel and the influence of individual anatomical differences upon the tongue shape were examined. Results are presented as ultrasonograms obtained in the Band TM-type presentations. The TM mode enables, among others, determining the amplitude of deflection of a point on the tongue surface during articulation that is the most change-prone at a given distance from the hyoid bone. Obtained results were used for design and construction of a tongue phantom and a mechanical setup to control the phantom shape. The proposed tongue phantom is crucial element of a natural tongue motions simulator during articulation that can be used as a major tool in therapy of deaf people, people with hearing and pronunciation disorders.

The equation makes it possible to design a bioacoustic link by assuming a given study range in a biological medium, and estimating the required power ratio or power level drop, and then selecting a value for the ratio by means of ultrasonic transducer parameters. A biological medium submerged in water between a transmitting and receiving ultrasonic transducer was studied in a streamlined manner as quasi-homogeneous, or more specifically, in the form of a multilayered tissue structure with parallel border surfaces. In the paper, sample calculations of the relation between power level drop and the length of the bioacoustic link in biological media, for ultrasonic wave frequency in the range of 1-5 MHz were performed; using a modified range explicit equation formulated for a hydroacoustic link. The calculations were verified in an experiment.

The position of the tongue while pronouncing a definite vowel and the influence of individual anatomical differences upon the tongue shape were examined. Results are presented as ultrasonograms obtained in the B- and TM-type presentations. The TM mode enables, among others, determining the amplitude of deflection of a point on the tongue surface during articulation that is the most change-prone at a given distance from the hyoid bone. Obtained results were used for design and construction of a tongue phantom and a mechanical setup to control the phantom shape. This method allows us to calculate the acoustic field for different sectors of the probe with assigned geometry of elementary transducers' location. The idea is to sum acoustic fields generated by all elementary transducers with the use of geometrical transformations of coordinates of location of the discussed points of the acoustic field against each of the transducers. In order to verify the calculation results measurements of acoustic field distribution were also carried out for selected sectors of these probes. On the basis of an analysis of calculation results the size of electronically switched transmitting sector was optimized (in the sense of the number of concurrently radiating elementary transducers) for a linear and a ring ultrasonic multi-element probes from the point of view of their use for visualizing the inside of a biological structure by means of UTT.

During this study a pair of multielement ultrasonic probes (sending and receiving) was designed and constructed in the form of matrices of a number of small elementary transducers intended for projection imaging of biological media in orthogonal projection. Moreover, the probes' design was presented and their basic parameters were measured. The results obtained confirm that the designed probes are suitable for projection imaging of biological media with the use of scanning method through switching of the right pairs of sending and receiving elementary transducers.

Some ways of scanning were proposed, using different measurement geometries and rendering possible the characterization and visualization of the inner structure of steel samples by projection and tomographic images of measured acoustic parameters. The measurements proposed in the paper allow us to obtain at the same time the distributions of mean values of a number of acoustic parameters characterizing the structure of samples: the mean amplitude of the ultrasonic wave after running through the sample, the mean runtime on the transmitter-receiver path, and the mean decrease of the ultrasonic wave frequency after running through the sample. These parameters measured in the tomographic scanning setup from many directions around the samples allow us to reconstruct the distributions of the local values of acoustic paramete...

Dedicated research stands were set up and used to perform ultrasonic projection scanning of various biological media (and phantoms of the media) that were submerged in water. Based on such measurements, images of the heterogeneous internal structure of the studied objects were obtained, which show two-dimensional distributions of the projection values of acoustic parameters. Those parameters were derived from recorded pulses of ultrasonic wave transmitted sequentially through a fixed projection surface. The obtained projection images were analyzed with respect to the method and quality of representation of the studied structures. Additionally, contrast resolution of ultrasonic projection images of the heterogeneous structure of a biological medium was estimated in relation to the size of the heterogeneity and with respect to scan...

Parameterization of bats' echolocation signal is essentially based on determination of spectral p... more Parameterization of bats' echolocation signal is essentially based on determination of spectral power density by means of the classic Fourier transform FFT. This study presents an alternative solution in this area of research, that is parametric and nonparametric modelling of short-time signals. The above mentioned methods are based on modelling of white noise with the use of digital filters the transmission of which was set in a way that allows the output signal to be as close to the modelled signal as possible. Proper selection of parameterization method -MA (Moving Average), AR (Autoregressive), ARMA (Autoregressive Moving Average), in respect of the character of signal spectrum (line spectrum, noise) maximally reduces the number of filter coefficients and improves the accuracy of bat's signal modelling. The work also presents the possibility of using the suggested parameterization methods in automatic species identification.

This paper presents and analyses the results of ultrasound transmission tomography imaging of the internal structure of the female breast biopsy phantom CIRS Model 052A and the results of the ultrasound reflection tomography imaging of a wire sample. Imaging was performed using a multi-modal ultrasound computerized tomography system developed with the participation of a private investor. The results were compared with the results of imaging obtained using dual energy CT, MR mammography and conventional US method. The obtained results indicate that the developed UTT and URT m...
