The aims of this research are (1) to find out whether Project-Based Learning (digital storytelling) can improve students' speaking skill and (2) to analyze the students' learning motivation when is implemented. The data were collected through observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. Findings of the research revealed that students' speaking competence was improved in some aspects such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and confidence. Those aspects were improved through a series of speaking activities including group discussion, interview, voice recording, and oral presentation. In addition, students' learning motivation increased in terms of: (a) the students invested more effort in the learning, (b) the students were more interested in the learning activity, and (c) the students' attitude became positive. A challenging multimedia-based project in which students created digital stories could foster students' digital literacy and enhance the students' participation thr oughout the learning process.

This action research was conducted in two cycles at the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar from August – October 2012. The qualitative and quantitative data were collected through observation, interview, questionnaire, field note, photographs and tests (pre-test and post-tests). The qualitative data were analyzed in five stages namely assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test. The research findings show that the use of guided writing could improve students’ writing skill and students’ learning motivation.

The objective of the research is to develop a model for teaching English using PBL which is feasible to develop the students' four English skills. The research method used is Educational Research and Development by designing a prototype consisting of the following steps: determining basic questions, designing a project, making a schedule, conducting the project, monitoring the project, examining the results, and evaluating the experience. The prototype was tried out for teaching English to SMA students, the weaknesses were revised, it was tried out again and revised until it became a feasible model. The result of the research shows that the model is feasible for the teacher to teach English and for the students to study and develop their four English skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing). It implies that project-based learning can be used by the English teachers to teach English to develop the students' four English skills.

To achieve these goals, the study used Design-Based Research and, in the practice, it was carried out in 3 major phases. The initial phase was the analysis of practical problems. The second phase was literature research to inform the planning and development of the prototype design and the last phase was the implementation and reflection of the implementation of the design. The study was carried out in one semester in an English Education Department of a university in Indonesia. The study results in an alternative design to an ER+ program that is called Transdicto. Transdicto is conducted in five major steps: (1) extensive reading/ listening, (2) note-taking, (3) exploring, (4) contextualizing, and (5) transforming. Observation and interview revealed that the students responded well to Transdicto; they found the steps of the activity were relatively easy to follow, useful, and engaging. acquisition (SLA) perspectives, ER provides the input which is essential for language acquisition to take place (Krashen, 2004, 2020a, b). It also has to support broad choices and many roles for both sexes to avoid unjust or bias gender issues. This study aimed at examining whether an EFL textbook published by the Indonesian government promotes gender equity by (1) mapping the proportion of textual and visual representation of males and females in the textbook; (2) describing how males and females are treated in the textbook. Through content analysis, the study revealed that the book is gender-biased as indicated from unbalanced (1) textual and visual representation (2) variety of activity, role, and occupation, (3) order of mention, and (4) adjectival portrayal. In all indicators, the female is underrepresented, hidden, and framed within traditional gender stereotyping. Nowadays more and more families use national language in their daily communication. Most parents (middle to high economic conditions) tend to use Indonesian to their children relating to the feeling of as educated and modern people. This circumstances lead to weaknesses of Javanese use among prospective Javanese speakers, children. Besides, fewer formal traditional social meetings make use of Javanese. This makes Javanese becoming much less common in its speech community. People feel more comfortable and secure using Indonesian in expressing their ideas because they lack of Javanese communicative competence in delivering their mind in terms of social norms and affective value. Finally Indonesian government hasn’t made an optimal effort to save indigenous language. It can be seen from school curriculums which determine Javanese as local content.
