Compared to normals there is a significant 48% increase in poly A RNA content of dystrophic muscle and its translatability was increased by 56% based on ~5S methionine incorporation into total protein systhesised. Immunoprecipitation of the translated products with monospecific antibodies showed that there is a 2.6 fold and a 2 fold increase in m and ~ calpains respectively. This underlines the importance of both synthetic and degenerative activities in the early pathology in DMD muscle.

The haemophilia A carrier was detected using Bcl I and Xba 1 polymorphic sites in intron 18 and 22 respectively. The cumulative efficiency of these two sites for detection of carriers is 100% since all 15 families tested were informative for one of these polymorphisms, thus confirming their usefulness for factor VIII gene mutations found in Andhra Pradesh.

Research paper thumbnail of Reliability of ultrasonographic arm muscle thickness measurement by various levels of health care providers in ICU

Clinical nutrition ESPEN, 2018

Reliability of arm muscle thickness measurement using ultrasonography (USG) by operators of varie... more Reliability of arm muscle thickness measurement using ultrasonography (USG) by operators of varied experience is unknown. Hence, we planned this study to determine the reliability of arm muscle thickness measured using USG by 5 observers with variable experience. This was a cross-sectional observational study which included critically ill patients with sepsis. Arm muscle thickness was measured in triplicate on Siemens ACUSON X300™ USG machine by each of 5 observers. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was computed to assess intra-observer and inter-observer variability of multiple observations. This study included 45 (30 - male) patients. Mean (±SD) age, APACHE and SAPS score of the participants were 54.95 (±15.97) years, 14.66 (±4.57) and 2.6 (±1.37), respectively. There were 135 observations by each observer. ICC (95%CI) for intra-observer reliability study for observer 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were 0.997 (0.995-0.998), 0.996 (0.993-0.998), 0.997 (0.996-0.998), 0.997 (0.994-0.998) ...

Research paper thumbnail of Gender differences exist in the association of leptin and adiponectin levels with insulin resistance parameters in prepubertal Arab children

AIM: Differences in correlations between leptin, adiponectin and insulin resistance in children e... more AIM: Differences in correlations between leptin, adiponectin and insulin resistance in children exist in different ethnic populations. No such information is available in Arab children. This study aims to fill this gap.METHODS: Three hundred and twenty-five prepubertal children were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumferences and fasting glucose were measured by standard procedures. Serum insulin, leptin and adiponectin were assayed by ELISA.RESULTS: Leptin and adiponectin levels were significantly correlated with anthropometric parameters, HOMA-IR and insulin in all subjects and with fasting glucose in girls only. Correlations of adiponectin with HOMA-IR and insulin in boys and of leptin with insulin in girls were independent of BMI, waist and hip circumferences.CONCLUSION: Gender differences exist in the distribution of adipocytokines in prepubertal children. The associations of adipocytokines with obesity biomarkers in prepubertal ...
