It is assumed that the appearance of the high energy seismic events is the result of faults’ activation in the vicinity of the mining excavation. This paper presents the analysis of a case study of one coal mine, where during exploitation of the longwall panel no. 729, the high energy seismic events occurred in the faulty neighborhood. The authors had analyzed the cause of the presented seismic events, described the methods of energy decreasing and applied methods of prevention in the selected mining region. The analysis concluded that the cause of the high energy seismic events, during the exploitation of the longwall panel no. 729 was the rapid displacements on the fault surface. The fault’s movements arose in th...

The increase in the application of numerical methods (finite element method FEM, finite difference method FDM, etc.) provides an opportunity to offer a different approach in describing mining deformations. However, this phenomenon is very complex, and due to numerical limitations, a two dimensional analysis was made (in plane strain) in most cases. Such 2D models could not accurately describe the mining geometry and geological conditions. The authors of this paper carried out the calculations in 3D models which describe a mining situation and the character of the strata in one Upper Silesian Polish mine. Furthermore, the authors include some tips for three-dimensional modeling.

The Author considers: the back analysis method, survey measurements , mining and geological data, numerical modelling, and estimating a GSI value which suitably describes rock mass conditions in the Upper Silesian area.

The individual rock layer strain parameters were estimated by means of comparing the measured subsidence trough with the result of numerical analysis carried out for the same geological and mining conditions. As a result of such an analysis, the values of the elastic modulus of the anisotropic model of strata were obtained in the region of underground mining influence.

It's leading to create a sinkholes on the surface. The primary objective of the following paper is to present a old and new methods of predicting the sinkholes. The authors present the methods of determine the sinkholes made by shallow underground excavations and the excavations in fault region. There were made some calculations based on FEM and FDM.

By analysing the movement trace of a point located on the surface, and the influence of the mining exploitation in the rock mass, an equation describing the relationship between the main components of the deformation conditions was formulated. The result is consistent with the in situ observations and indicates the change of the rock mass component volume due to mining exploitation. The analyses and in situ observations demonstrate clearly that the continuity equation adopted in many solutions in the form: 0 3 1 i i ii is fundamentally incorrect.
