A thorough defense of the biblical and historically orthodox doctrine of the Trinity will not be the focus of this paper, but will be assumed in its content. The temptation for many Christians when studying or conversing about the Trinity is to throw their hands up in the air in near exasperation and exclaim, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God (Deut 29:29).” But this temptation must be avoided, for while it is true that the doctrine of the Trinity climbs past human reason and comprehension, it is not unreasonable or contrary to logic. When the hard work of thinking deeply about God is jettisoned too early some of the beauty of the doctrine is forfeited. On the other hand, there is a temptation for those who enjoy stretching the boundaries of reason to go farther than Scripture has allowed them to go. This too is a dangerous mistake, for God has given them only how much He wills them to know and it is certainly enough. When after having peered into the deep things of God and experienced the humility of human limitations, one can rest in the blessed despair of knowing God, being known by Him, and yet never having exhausted His mysteries.
