Life satisfaction regressions involving about 59,000 individuals in 10 European countries, 1990–1997, imply that, consistent with epidemiological evidence, both life-cycle and cohort effects exist in the valuation of air quality. The age and cohort dependence of the sensitivity to air pollution translates into considerable differences in the valuation of clean air. (JEL Q51, Q53)

Population and Environment, 2011

Recent scholarship also suggests that emissions play a role in contemporary climate change and, as such, understanding the effect of population compositional change has considerable environmental policy importance. The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the macro-level relationship between population aging and emissions of sulfur dioxide. We extend a standard macroeconomic estimation function by including the age composition of the population. In doing so, we separate, for the first time in the literature on aging and the environment, the life-cycle dimension of the age structure from its cohort dimension. We utilize data representing a balanced panel of 25 OECD countries during the period from 1970 to 2000. Consistent with our expectations, we find that societies with a low proportion of young and a high proportion of senior citizens emit more sulfur dioxide. At the same time, our results suggest that a high proportion of individuals born before 1960 is positively correlated to national sulfur dioxide emissions. Our study contributes to understanding of past emission patterns in OECD countries and the findings may allow for improvements in future emission projections.

Our research is motivated by suggestions in the literature that emission-relevant consumption patterns may depend on the position in the life cycle and on the birth cohort to which people belong. We augment standard macroeconomic emission regressions by including the age and cohort composition of the population. Our estimation results on a panel of data for 26 countries, spanning the period 1960-2005, suggest that both life-cycle and cohort effects belong in a macroeconomic emission function for carbon dioxide. We find that shifts in both the age and the cohort composition have contributed to rising carbon emissions in OECD countries.

E... more Most industrialized countries will be affected by a significant population aging in the future. Economic consequences of this phenomenon have been intensely debated in the recent past. Nevertheless, the consequences of this coming population aging for environmental quality are largely unknown. This paper investigates how environmental preferences for local air quality depend on the age-composition of the population. We use the life satisfaction approach to explore age-specific preferences for local air quality, as measured by PM10 concentrations. Our estimation results on a panel of 25 OECD countries, spanning the period 1990 to 2004, indicate that preferences for local air quality seem to be U-shaped in age. We conjecture this result to arise since the physical health of young and old age groups is more negatively affected by air pollution. As a result, the coming rise in the share of the elderly population constitutes a potential for an increase in preferred local air quality. JEL...

Parties involved in the energy system need to access data and services in order to carry out and coordinate their activities. This paper gives an overview of concepts and discussions around building an infrastructure serving the purpose of giving authorized parties access to data and resources in a non-discriminatory manner. It also proposes next steps to be taken to concretise the concepts into an infrastructure.
