With reference to contemporary research and models that hold the idea that humans possess non-verbal inborn cognitive systems for estimating sizes and processing quantities, empirical data from a multi-case embodied design study on early learning of numbers is discussed. Based on observational data and on a discrepancy in the results of traditional and modified GiveN tasks for determining the cardinal knower level, it is contended that designs which embrace innate spatially organized representations of numerosity through body-based metaphorical mappings, could guide the development of tools for measuring the cardinal concept.

Literature treating the relationship between sport participation during adolescence was compared to literature into characteristics of Norwegian adolescent sport. Organized and competitive sport does not facilitate lifelong continuation in physical activity, due to its characteristics of sport: adolescents often drop out from sport, adolescents specializes in one sport instead of keeping or developing a broad repertoire for physical activity, and adolescents do not feel autonomous and free in a sport setting as it is adult controlled. Assisted by Bourdieu’s theory of field and habitus, the analysis indi cates that habitus (including characteristics of social class) better explains LLP than does adolescent sport participation. It is proposed that habitus can be seen as the intermediate mec...

How physical activity is promoted and organized varies across countries. This article focuses on the Norwegian system, which is characterized by voluntary sport being organized during leisure time, and all being federated under the Norwegian Olympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NOC). Guided by the field concept of Bourdieu, historical works and contemporary sport policy documents are analyzed in order to explore how health is considered within the sport context. The conclusion is that health is both facilitated and constrained in the sport field. The voluntary dominance of the sport field makes it sustainable in relation to providing physical activity. However, the voluntary dominance of the sport field also makes it vulnerable and unpredictable in relation to implementing state sport and/or health policy. The state cannot in any way be assured to achieve its health objectives through the sport field.

Twentyeight athletes who won medals in Olympic Games or World Championships were accessed using the Behavior Inventories for Cross County Skiers (Rushall and Vikander, 1987). Nine clusters common to both men and women were identified as: relationship with other athletes; relationship with the coach; relationship to significant others; training factors; pre-competition factors; competition factors; reactions to things that go wrong; considerations about the sport, and things champions like about cross country skiing. With this inquiry we have uncovered both gender similarities and differences among the world’s foremost cross country skiers in psychological dimensions as well as in the behavioral arena.
