The Palgrave Handbook of Literature and Mathematics

As the essays in this collection and other recent work demonstrate, "literature and mathematics,"... more As the essays in this collection and other recent work demonstrate, "literature and mathematics," a field that originated with the study of allusions and overt themes, has evolved to include the examination of mathematics as form and metaphor, as well as historicist excavations of mathematics as a participant in subtle and complex power dynamics operating among persons, cultures, and texts. Shakespeare studies has similarly courted both the overt and phantom presence of dozens of discourses to great profit. Mathematics has not generally appeared in the latter trend, perhaps because the presumed literalness of mathematics' objectivity would seem to require literal presence; certainly because of aversions born of comparatively recent disciplinary distinctions: mathematicians have no feelings, and English professors can't balance their checkbooks (or so I am often told). 1 This chapter proposes to extend the work of literature and mathematics with an argument that deploys readings of mathematics overtly present in literary texts to create a way of reading mathematically when mathematics is only implicit, or not present at all. Early modern European mathematics was a cultural practice engaged in the paradoxical activity of seeking certainty while constantly creating objects that threatened certainty. Take, for example, the curious objects created by early modern mathematicians as they sought to clarify the relationship of the ancient discipline of geometry to the technical and scribal practices we now call algebra. As I have suggested elsewhere, this work constituted early

Data collection is constant and even insidious, with every click and every "like" stored somewhere for something. This book reminds us that data is anything but "raw," that we shouldn't think of data as a natural resource but as a cultural one that needs to be generated, protected, and interpreted. The book's essays describe eight episodes in the history of data from the predigital to the digital. Together they address such issues as the ways that different kinds of data and different domains of inquiry are mutually defining; how data are variously "cooked" in the processes of their collection and use; and conflicts over what can -- or can't -- be "reduced" to data. Contributors discuss the intellectual history of data as a concept; describe early financial modeling and some unusual sources for astronomical data; discover the prehistory of the database in newspaper clippings and index cards; and consider contemporary "dataveillance" of our online habits as well as the complexity of scientific data curation. These measurements provide clear evidence for bulk superconductivity in this system, with the sample resistance dropping to zero around 12 K. This work has also revealed ferromagnetic ordering of the S = 7/2 Eu^2+ moments along the c-axis (Tcurie ˜ 19 K). Finally, our muSR results indicate that the Eu magnetism is very homogeneous and occupies the full-volume fraction, pointing to real-space coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in this material.

Substituent variations on the imidazole ring have shown that lipophilicity and hydrophilicity can influence the imidazolium salts’ anti-proliferative activity and aqueous

Research paper thumbnail of Decay and renormalization of a Higgs amplitude mode in a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet

arXiv: Strongly Correlated Electrons, 2020

Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrate that Ba$_2$FeSi$_2$O$_7$ is a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet in close proximity to a quantum critical point. While a longitudinal mode is clearly observed throughout the Brillouin zone, the decay of the mode is particularly pronounced at the zone center. This phenomenon, as well as the corresponding renormalization of the transverse and longitudinal mode dispersions, are well described by a generalized linear spin-wave theory with one-loop corrections.
