Design/Methodology/Approach: The study used the review approach to analyse texts based on examples. It relies on a thorough examination of existing literature on the topic. Content analysis was adopted to analyse the study. Findings: From the analysis used in the study, it was established that verbs were seen in both theories to be at the heart of meaning. Research Limitation: The study discusses the research limitations of both theories, including issues related to cross-linguistic differences and the difficulty of accounting for idiosyncratic uses of verbs. Practical Implication: The practical implications of these theories are explored, s...

She has written several novels that expose the plight of women in African cultures. This study purposely selected five novels of Emecheta namely Second-Class Citizen (1974), The Bride Price (1976), The Joys of Motherhood (1979), Destination Biafra (1982) and Kehinde (1994), and explores as its purpose how Emecheta uses characterisation and theme as tools to develop her heroines. In this light, the heroines are discussed precisely by looking at the choices they make in attaining self-actualisation or self-fulfilment. The discussion also examines the elements or factors that facilitate the success or otherwise of the heroines from developing or growing from states of powerlessness and subjection to states of maturity, where they take decisions for themselves, bearing in mind the consequences of their choices. It is an oral art form performed in the form of work songs, play songs, traditional verses, riddles, stories and prayers. The S’wamba orature is the most popular of the folksongs of the people of Edina. The popularity of the folk song can be linked to the fact that all important traditional events are celebrated in songs and the S’wamba is never missed out at such events. The study’s objective is to highlight the need for people to appreciate the unique cultural legacy of S’wamba as a folksong among the people of Edina, now known as Elmina in the Central region of Ghana. Both the purposive sampling and random sampling methods were used to select respondents to elicit information needed for this study. The study adopted the cultural criticism literary theory as the underlying framework to conduct the study. A total of fifty (50) songs were recorded, transcribed, translat...

In this essence, this study investigated how age brings out the difference in the use of pronouns between three generational groups Design/Methodology/Approach: Group WhatsApp chats were collected from three generational groups of students based on their willingness to give it out for analysis. These three generational groups are postgraduate students and undergraduates (Level 100, Level 400). These groups were randomly collected from over four hundred (400 students of the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast in Ghana based on convenience. A quantitative research design was adopted for this study with the help of a corpus tool (AntConc) to analyse the huge data gathered based on percentages. Findings: This study found out that postgraduates and undergraduates (Level 100) use the first-person singular pronoun but pos...

This verbal art of the people is expressed in work songs, play songs, traditional verses, riddles, stories and prayers, but the folk song, from the researchers’ observation is arguably the most popular of their oral forms. The folksong owes its popularity among the people to the fact that it is found in almost every aspect of their lives since almost every significant event is celebrated in song. The study sought to find out how suggestive references in the diction of the song texts are used to communicate ideas to enrich meaning. The study combined the use of both purposive sampling and random sampling methods to select respondents to reach the well-informed among the informants who were contacted for information on the songs. The deconstructive literary theory was adopted. In all, fifty (50) songs were recorded, transcribed, translated an...

These normally capture stories with themes like corruption, bribery, smuggling, fetishism, religion, politics, among a host of others. This is the thematic situation of stories from both English and French-speaking West African nations. The issue of corruption and its attendant ills, religion and superstition, and many interesting subjects take centre stage in this paper as it critically takes readers through the novel identifying every necessary point that the novel covers. The paper, which is a book review concludes that the writer presents a fine story line that makes her story come alive to educate, inform and entertain her readers, aside highlighting the satirical innuendoes that the novel pushes against a cross-section of individuals in the West African society.

In this regard, this study is interested in investigating the traces of bond between Emecheta and her characters in her novels. Clearly, she does not allow her readers to know the stories are about her. It is only when readers read her book titled Head above Water (1986) that they come to realize that all the stories they have been reading are Emecheta’s own life stories. Using the feminist theory, this paper purposively selected five novels of Emecheta and traces the bond that she creates between her and her characters in these novels. The paper concludes that Emecheta displays mastery over her narratives and succeeds in telling her life story through a blend of both fact and fiction.

However, in communities which lack adequate facilities, the teaching of the English Language can pose a bigger challenge to the instructor who is committed to doing a good job. In order to establish the veracity or otherwise of this assertion, the Juaboso Senior High School was chosen as a case study for this research. A total of two hundred and forty (240) respondents were surveyed in the school using the quota sampling technique. Sixty respondents were selected from among students and the English language teachers in the school. The data collected was analysed using Percentages, Mean and Standard Deviation. After the data collected was analyzed, the study found out that that there are indeed very serious problems with English language teaching in the deprived area. The paper, therefore, recommends among others that qualified English teachers...

They talk and discuss social, political, economic and many other problems that affect their immediate societies. For many dramatists, exploring different techniques to discuss issues of utmost importance to them is a big problem. The reason is that the techniques define the success or otherwise of the play they write as far as literary style is concerned. Athol Fugard and his co-writers Winston Ntsona and John Kani lived and wrote the play Sizwe Bansi is Dead during the era of apartheid in South Africa. They witnessed many of the injustices that happened during the apartheid era. In steering their play to a conclusion that leaves their readers and theatre audience feeling extremely satisfied that they had enjoyed the play, Fugard and his co-writers adopt techniques in drama to create a virtual realism that sends the audience wondering whether or not they were in the centre of the ...
