However, such structures may suffer from poor acoustic insulation properties. Therefore, an increasing attention is being focused on combined structural-acoustic optimization to find a balance between these conflicting characteristics. Nevertheless, properly defining and handling acoustic constraints is not always straightforward and it is usually experienced-based. In this paper, an optimization process on a sandwich-based train floor component, i.e. the inner floor, is carried out to minimize its mass per unit area. First, the acoustic constraint, i.e. the weighted sound reduction index, is investigated and discussed. Secondly, different optimization methods, both gradient and non-gradient based, are used to solve the problem and the results are compared. Finally, an assessment of the various methods is given.

A challenging part of interior noise prediction is the determination of realistic aero-acoustic sources. Experimental data e.g. for bogie and wiper generated noise at high speeds are scarcely available. Experimental setups (e.g. wind tunnel) are not an alternative, because of the necessary wind tunnel size, the high flow speed and further important details like a moving belt. Therefore the source data used for the acoustic simulation presented in this paper are obtained from CFD calculations. A brief introduction into engineering aero-acoustics is presented, including a few technical, historical railway reminiscences. Following this, the use and results of modern simulation and experimental tools are exemplified. The computational simulations focus on cab-interior noise caused by aerodynamic sources transmitted through the front window and floor of the driver's cab of a high speed train. The ...

The prototype has a novel design with a triangular base and a double front wheel on a lever arm arrangement to simplify passing across obstacles. Both technical tests and user tests were carried out. The main conclusion is that "Walker" is in several respects ergonomically advantageous compared to the traditional out-door rollators, especially in rough terrain and when passing obstacles. Suggestions for improvements of certain functions of "Walker" are made, such as handling in narrow environments and the ability to fold the rollator. 1 Introduction Mobility aids are anticipated to be increasingly demanded in the future. Apart from an ageing population in Europe the elderly of the next decades are not expected to be content with a passive everyday living. To meet this demand a conceptually new out-door r...

The first method is applicable when the source is surrounded by many reflectors, or inside a box-like structure. A single monopole with average transfer function is suggested for this situation. For a source with a strong directivity placed in an essentially free space, the ''box-source'' method is recommended to take into account of the source directivity. The total sound power is in this case divided into five independent noise sources which are obtained via ordinary sound power measurement methods. Experimental verifications are made for several cases in laboratory. Satisfactory results are obtained for both methods.

For this purpose a semi-analytical finite element technique has been adapted and further developed. With this technique, the dispersion properties of waveguide structures built up of thin-walled finite strip elements can be calculated. The method is applied to analyze wave propagation in rib-stiffened plate structures typical of ship construction, providing a detailed understanding of the nature of waves propagating in such waveguide systems. The results from this analysis show that flexural waves propagating in such structures can be divided into subgroups with respect to which parts of the structure determine the wavenumbers associated with the propagation. It is shown that in the low frequency region the wavenumbers may be approximated by applying so-called equivalent plate theory, in which the built-up plating is represented by an equivalent orthotropic plate. Also, at higher frequencies the wavenumbers of most flexural modes in a frequency region just above the cut-on frequency, may be estimated by applying equivalent plate theory.

In particular vehicle based control measures are discussed including various measures against curve and brake squeal, intelligent fan speed regulation taking advantage of the thermal inertia of the systems to be cooled, choice of fan types and innovative energy storage devices. It is shown that dedicated measures on the vehicles can lead to significantly reduced emissions at locations where people are mostly disturbed. For future decision making on urban noise control measures it is essential that the calculation models used must incorporate in sufficient detail the source mechanisms that are mostly relevant from a disturbance perspective.
