From the results of the analysis it was shown that there is significant relationship between the elevation and climate variables (Rainfall, Tmax and Tmin). The study also shows that GWR has smaller residual sum of square than OLS in analysing the relationship between Elevation and Climate data. This may be due to the consideration of the spatial variation of the relationship over the study region. When mapping the results of GWR model it was observed that the effect of Elevation on climate variables appears to vary geographically Keyword : Geographical Weighted Regression (GWR), Ordinary Least square (OLS),

Research paper thumbnail of Pastoral Grazing Management System: A Panacea to Effective Livestock Management in Nigeria

The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies, 2020

Introduction The Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) establishment initiative was conceived by the Federal... more Introduction The Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) establishment initiative was conceived by the Federal Government of Nigeria and was announced in June 25, 2019. The scheme was meant to curb the periodic conflicts between Fulani herdsmen and arable crops farmers in Nigeria. Also, it will allow herders to settle within a defined geographical space and tend their cattle as opposed to free range nomadic system in search of grazing lands. Pilot zones within specific geopolitical zones have been designated for the commencement of the RUGA policy (Arotiba, 2019; Toromade, 2019). This policy has elicited strong opposition from many quarters, especially in the Nigerian southern geopolitical areas that have been selected for the purpose of the pilot scheme. The contending issues are based on the premise that the scheme has been designed to favour only people from Fulani extraction as cattle business is one of their major occupations. Also, seen as a process for Fulani expansionism in Nigeria. Many opinionated that cattle/ranching business is a personal business and should not be championed by Federal Government. The inadequate consultation with all relevant stakeholders before official pronouncement of the scheme to take effect also resulted to stiff opposition of the RUGA policy

The effect of metformin on fasting blood glucose (FBG), homogenized kidney tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PCO), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and histology in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were investigated. Eighteen Sprague Dawley rats were assigned into three groups (n= 6 rats per group i.e. A; negative control on distilled water, B; positive control on distilled water and C; on 100 mg/kg/day metformin groups. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was induced using streptozotocin 65 mg/kg intraperitoneally and treatments were given daily by oral gavage for 3 weeks. Plasma fasting blood glucose (FBG), kidney tissue oxidative stress markers and histology were determined. The results showed that FBG, MDA, and PCO levels were significantly higher in B group compared to A group, and lower in C group compared to B. The TAC level was significantly lower in B compared to A and higher in C compared to B group of rats. Histological study showed improvement in kidney histology in all treatments, however, kidney weight did not differ. The results suggest that, metformin reduces oxidative stress in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats possibly through its antihyperglycaemic effect.

The dataset were both radiometically and atmospherically processed and projected on a 0.05 degree climate modelling Grid (CMD). The dataset was analysed using principal component analysis utilising the standardised principal components (SPC) and trendlines. The results from the analysis indicated that there are both negative and positive long term trends in vegetation cover changes. However, there was more greening trend of vegetation in northern part of the study area which explained 74% and 82% of the total variance in the first PCs for the NOAA-AVHRR and MODIS, dataset respectively. However, the second PC's indicated the seasonal variation of vegetation NDVI, explaining only 4.2% and 4.8% of the total variance of the AVHRR and Aqua/MODIS-NDVI datasets respectively.

International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, 2021

Introduction Metastatic heart tumors are rare, occurring in 1.5–20% of cancer patient autopsies. ... more Introduction Metastatic heart tumors are rare, occurring in 1.5–20% of cancer patient autopsies. Lymphoma, melanoma, leukemia, and carcinomas of the lung, esophagus, and breast are the most prevalent causes of these metastases, although they can originate from any malignant tumor. Here we report a case of triple-negative breast cancer with cardiac metastasis mimicking myxoma. Presentation of case A 39-year-old woman presented at the emergency department with shortness of breath. Vital signs were hypotension and tachypnea. There were coarse crackles at the bases of both lungs. Electrocardiography results showed a normal sinus rhythm. Chest X-ray revealed cardiomegaly with signs of pulmonary edema. Echocardiography revealed a large left atrial (LA) mass protruding to the mitral valve and attached to the interatrial septum during diastole. The patient was diagnosed with cardiogenic shock, acute kidney injury, elevated liver enzymes, and an LA mass. Surgical excision through median sternotomy was planned. Intraoperatively, an LA mass was found. The histopathology evaluation showed an LA mass with invasive ductal carcinoma of metastatic breast tumors. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) confirmed the diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer that had metastasized to the heart. Postoperative echocardiography confirmed complete excision of the tumor. Discussion Breast cancer that has metastasized to the heart is uncommon. This patient was referred to the surgical oncology section for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer with cardiac metastasis. Conclusion A heart mass should be suspected of having metastasized if the patient has a history of malignancy, even if it occurred several years earlier.

Research paper thumbnail of Left atrial reverse remodeling improves sinus restoration following mitral valve replacement: A case report

International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, 2021

Introduction Mitral stenosis is one of the most common abnormalities in rheumatic heart disease (... more Introduction Mitral stenosis is one of the most common abnormalities in rheumatic heart disease (RHD). These patients often experience atrial fibrillation, due to left atrial dilatation, causing a high risk of thromboembolic events; rhythm or heart rate control are thus important treatment strategies. In patients undergoing surgery, sinus rhythm restoration is not fully understood, and not all surgical patients return to sinus rhythm. We report an adult woman with mitral regurgitation who experienced sinus restoration after mitral valve replacement (MVR) surgery. Case presentation A 44-year-old woman presented with chief complaints of orthopnea and shortness of breath during activity for 2 months. Electrocardiography (ECG) revealed atrial fibrillation with normal ventricular response, and echocardiography showed severe mitral stenosis with Wilkins score of 10 (3-2-3-2), moderate mitral and aortic regurgitation due to RHD, moderate tricuspid regurgitation with probable pulmonary hypertension, normal left ventricular systolic function, ejection fraction of 60.5% (biplane). MVR surgery was performed using a mechanical mitral valve. Postoperative ECG found sinus rhythm and first-degree AV block. Postoperative echocardiography found a decreased left Atrial volume index of 70.8 mL/m2, indicating further remodeling of the patient's heart. Conclusion Sinus restoration sometimes occurs in patients after MVR. The correction procedure causes minimal anatomical changes, particularly the loss of non-conductive and pathological tissue, followed by hemodynamic changes that eventually lead to the left atrial reverse remodeling mechanism.

Research paper thumbnail of An Assessment of Vegetation Cover Changes across Northern Nigeria Using Trend Line and Principal Component Analysis

This study is on the application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and trend line using time-... more This study is on the application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and trend line using time-series satellite dataset from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (AQUA/MODIS) with the objective of characterizing vegetation cover changes across Northern Nigeria from 1981 to 2010.

Research paper thumbnail of Cardiac metastasis of triple-negative breast cancer mimicking myxoma: A case report
