MATERIAL and METHODS This was a descriptive study conducted during the spring semester of 2017-2018 academic year. A total of 142 volunteer final year nursing department students were included in the study. A questionnaire was prepared by the researcher as a data collection tool. RESULTS Of the 142 final year nursing students, 93.7% responded correctly to the optimal blood-letting time for biochemical analysis. It was determined that 92.9% of the students correctly know blood-letting positions affect blood values or not, and 94.7% know the reason why blood-letting is performed in sitting or lying positions. Of the 142 students, 90.1% correctly identified the medium urine samples. It was determined that 96.4% of the students know within how many minutes at maximum blood samples should be sent to the laboratory after drawing. CONCLUSION The study has provided evidence that the study course of "clinical biochemistry" included into the syllabus in the academic year of 2017-2018 for the first time increased the knowledge of the students about the collection, storage, and transfer of biochemistry laboratory specimens. The study concludes that it is advisable to include the study course of "clinical biochemistry"that predominantly handles the pre-analytical phase into the syllabi designed for nursing schools.

In this study, we aimed to determine the level of knowledge of nursing students regarding prevention of healthcare associated infections. Method: The population of the study consisted of 667 student nurses who studied in the nursing department of a university. The data were obtained from 506 students who accepted to participate in the study between May 13 and 17, 2016. In the study, a questionnaire form titled "Determination of Knowledge Levels of Nurses about Prevention of Hospital Infections" developed by the researcher was used. Results: The mean score of knowledge that the nursing students had regarding prevention of healthcare-associated infections was 54.28 ± 11.16, the hand hygiene knowledge score was 16.05 ± 4.48, and the mean score of surgical site infections was 5.53 ± 2.42. As seen in the factors affecting the mean scores for the students' knowledge on the prevention of nosocomial infections, it was determined that the mean score of the third-grade students (56.29) was higher than the other averages (p < .05). Conclusion: It was determined that the mean knowledge scores of the student nurses about preventing healthcare associated infections were moderate and that their mean knowledge scores on surgical site infections were low.

Increasing numbers of patients are reported in EDs for transplantation-related complications. Complications related to organ transplantation can be categorized into four groups: anatomical, infection, rejection, and drug toxicity. In patients presenting to the ED, all these categories should be considered in the differential diagnosis. However, the exact etiology, may not be known until admission to the hospital for further evaluation. Therefore, every complaint from a transplant patient should be carefully evaluated. In this study, we will review the principles for the management of patients with renal transplantation in the ED.

The questionnaire form used in research was applied to 180 nurses with personal interviews. Percentages and the chi-square test were used for the analysis of the data. The percentage of orders written on daily basis (63.3%) in medical clinics, signing ratio of nurses after taking the physician order (65.6%) and taking order by phone (78.3%) are found high for risk as a medical error in our study. 96.7 % of the nurses has stated that if they notice a mistake at the order, they reconsult with the doctor to repeat the order. As a result of a probable medical error after a verbal order, the ratio of "I have no idea" (38.8%) answer may indicate that the nurses could be legally responsible. This study showed that nurses have had knowledge and performance deficiency in taking orders. Developing a multidisciplinary orientation and training program is necessary for preventing medical errors.

Research paper thumbnail of How Much Do ED Patients Know About Medication Prescribed for Them on Discharge? A Pilot Study in Turkey

Journal of Emergency Nursing, 2013

Hospital emergency departments provide health care to patients with various ailments and illnesse... more Hospital emergency departments provide health care to patients with various ailments and illnesses. If necessary, doctors write prescriptions for patients who visit emergency departments for their use after discharge from hospitals. It is important to inform patients about their prescribed medications because compliance with the prescription plays an important role in the success of the treatment. If a patient must use more than one medication, this might result in negative drug interactions. These undesirable developments may adversely affect the treatment process and cause many unplanned patient visits to emergency departments. This study was carried out to determine patient knowledge as related to the names, dosage, frequency, purpose and course of medications given on discharge from emergency departments. Study subjects were patients who came to the emergency department between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm during a period of 1 month. Data were collected through use of a questionnaire. In this study, it was found that 37% of the patients (37 patients) had no knowledge at all about the prescribed medications; however, out of 63 patients, 61.9% had knowledge of when to take the medications, 57.1% knew the purpose of the particular medications, and 52.3% were aware of the appropriate dosage. Furthermore, 31.7% knew the name of the medications and 25.3% knew something about their prescribed course. Upon discharge from emergency departments, patients should be fully and properly informed about their prescribed medications through a written document. Providing patients with information concerning the correct use of their prescribed medications enables them to use the medications appropriately, thereby increasing not only their satisfaction but also their compliance with the treatment plan. As a result, this vital information may help to decrease rehospitalizations.
