Nonetheless, one of the main challenges for the implementation of effective co-creation strategies is the incorporation of knowledge from diverse social systems. Knowledge production has been approached through different methodological models, such as the quintuple helix innovation by Carayannis, or the diffuse/expert knowledge model by Manzini. These theoretical models are based on linear knowledge transfers, without sufficiently depicting alternative knowledge flows among (un)conventional actors. In view of these limitations, the research proposes a third strategy: the KREBS cycle of creativity defined by Oxman is a conceptual map capable of describing knowledge transfers across the four modalities of human creativity (i.e., science, engineering, design, and art...

The aim of this article is to discuss the political capacities of design. The usual way of exploring the relation between design and politics has focused on design's ability to enfold the political, that is, to inscribe political codes into things, places, and bodies, operating at a sub-political level. An exploration is proposed of an alternative way of thinking about how design can become political matter: the propositional capacity to unfold the political, that is, to extend, interrogate and speculate about the types of things, places and bodies that constitute the cosmos of the political, operating at a level that is cosmopolitical.

This is done through a case study, the design of General Vara del Rey, which is offered here as a model to explore a novel urban political ecology that calls into question dominant definitions of public spaces as self-contained sites operating independently of natural and infrastructural spaces. Through the double movement of 'the technification of public space' and 'the publicization of infrastructures', the square aims to rethink the political ecology of urban public spaces by enabling the effective incorporation and participation of infrastructural and natural elements as active actors into the public and political life of the community. It is argued that the transformation of infrastructures into fully visible, public and political agents provides a useful model to address the growing proliferation of infrastructural and technological elements onto contemporary urban surfaces and to open up the possibility of new forms of civic participation and engagement.
