If this question has not always been formulated in terms of alignment, all the studied cases deal with how patients comply, or not, with practitioners’ first actions. They show that social actions such as suggestions, proposals, offers, etc. are not unilaterally offered by practitioners to patients, but frequently discussed and negotiated. This may result in patients being more willing to comply with jointly achieved solutions. In this paper, we will fill in some more details of this picture by focusing on interactional resources used by patients to show their disalignment toward less investigated types of first actions (i.e. non-medication recommendations, home remedies, proposals or suggestions to accomplish certain activities), thereby acknowledging the central role played by patients in two different heal...

While a wide range of literature has been devoted to compliments since Pomerantz's paper in 1978, with different methodologies, in different settings and in different languages , Arabic is understudied in this respect, as well as on other aspects of interaction . The study is based on naturally occurring interactions analysed in a conversation analytic/interactional linguistics approach. The first part of the paper presents the main aspects of previous studies on compliments that will be used as reference points for the present study, before coming to the corpora and the methodology for comparison. The last part of the paper is devoted to the interactional multimodal comparative analysis of the two corpora. This analysis has brought to the forefront some shared practices in the use and management of different forms of comments and assessmen...

Understanding the development of this research field involves taking into account, not only the world’s sociopolitical situation and the phenomena of globalization and migration, but also the evolutions of different research domains during the last decades. On the one hand, research on interpreting as/in interaction is related to the important bulk of studies that have been carried out on intercultural communication, and to the outcomes it has produced concerning the understanding of linguistic as well as social phenomena; on the other hand, it is also linked to research on migrants’ rights, and to translation and interpreting studies.

This paper is concerned with uncovering some of the "evidences invisibles" (R. Carroll 1987) at the root of ordinary interactions, examining first the elements pertaining to the situation (how representations of time and space and of the concept of participation, vary), then how interaction itself functions, through the reading of the script and the way the different phases are managed: beginning and ending an encounter, with its rituals, requests, refusals, etc. The corpora consist mainly in interactions recorded in various shops in France, Syria and Tunisia.

The HAMMAM project "Hammam, Aspects and Multidisciplinary Methods of Analysis for the Mediterranean region" is based on participatory process to encourage local dwellers and hammam mangers to take an interest in their heritage. First visits to the Ayyoubid public bath, hammam Ammuna, have shown lots of deterioration. The hammam was rejected by local dwellers because of bad reputation. In 2007, as a result of the HAMMAM project and the work of the Syrian team, a new manager of the hammam started a rehabilitation work. Hammam Ammuna nowadays is open for local dwellers and could be considered as a starting point of a sustainable future of the neighborhood while reviving an historical building of social and economic function.
