More specifically, it is intended to fill a need for more information on the relative importance of different types of market outlets available to livestock producers. Significant changes have taken place since World War I. Presented in this report are data and charts showing percentages of each species of livestock sold by farmers through different types of market outlets by regions during 1955. A discussion of market outlets for the United States as a whole precedes the detail by regions and species. For the most part, this is a source of data rather than an interpretive report. Basic information on livestock market outlets presented here may later be used as background material for more specialized studies. Estimates of sales of livestock by farmers through different types of market outlets in 1955 are based...

The technique involves using phase contrast instead of diffraction contrast. Information on the periodicities of the crystal planes is carried by the electron beams diffracted from these planes. By recombining one or more of these beams with the transmitted beam, fringe patterns may be obtained under appropriate conditions which represent the crystal planes and show the correct periodicities. In order to image the planes, it is necessary that the resolution of the electron microscope be not limiting. Furthermore, lens aberrations and other factors can introduce a relative phase shift between the beams used to form the image, resulting in a progressive loss of contrast and information.

The present experiments were designed to explore the situation for dislocations nearly normal to the foil.Germanium was selected since dislocations are immobile at room temperature A (110) oriented crystal slice was chemically thinned in a 95/5 mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. Foils were examined in the high resolution stage of a Philips EM300 microscope modified to give a maximum magnification of one million. The specimen was oriented to give a strong zone of {111} systematic reflections, and {111} lattice images (3.27Å spacing) produced by the 2-beam tilt technique. The electromagnetic beam deflector was set-up so that the tilt switch could be used to switch from the +g to -g image. It was found possible to do this at one million magnification without appreciable change in image quality, field or focus, permittin...

They are richly endowed with biological diversity, including the crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), which is a threatened species, and are characterized by their organic (histosol) soils that have developed recently, approximately within the past 5000 years. Their unique ecological features, as well as logistical diculties in accessing and utilizing peatswamps, have not, however, deterred exploitation. Some of the tallest, most commercially desirable timber species, such as ramin (Gonystylus bancanus) have been harvested routinely in the peatswamp forests of Sarawak. Also, due to its primary location in coastal lowlands in close proximity to human activity, drained and reclaimed peatswamp land is desirable for development of highways, housing, and industrial and plantation estates. Ecological information is needed urgently by decision-makers and landowners , who may be contemplating conversion of natural peatswamp ecosystems to other land uses, to undergird conservation policy and best management practices for the wise stewardship and sustainable development of this ecosystem. The paper provides an overview of peatswamp ecology with recommendations for avoiding or reducing potential ecological impacts associated with peatswamp development in Borneo, which include a moratorium on further development until a Borneo peatswamp survey and inventory as well as a holistic, multi-sectoral, integrated environmental assessment and planning procedure are completed; gazetting of pristine peatswamp forest parcels as totally protected areas; implementing highly restricted multiple-use policy that allows development only in degraded areas, and insuring protection of the critical hydrological role of peatswamps in providing fresh water supply for human use as an overriding criterion in assessing any development scheme.
