Research paper thumbnail of The first sugar of the repeat units is essential for the Wzy polymerase activity and elongation of the O-antigen lipopolysaccharide

We demonstrate that the activity of the Escherichia coli O-antigen polymerase (Wzy) is dependent on the first sugar of the O-antigen repeat unit to produce the O-antigen polymerization and therefore, there is a need for a concerted action with the enzyme transferring the initial HexNAc to undecaprenyl phosphate (UDP-HexNAc: polyprenol-P HexNAc-1-P transferase). Furthermore, in the case of Aeromonas hydrophila Wzy-O34 polymerization activity, the enzyme is permissive with the sugar at the nonreducing end of the O-antigen repeat unit.

Following the usage of home energy meters by six families in a major city in the United Kingdom, we investigate what information is important for the assessment of energy usage at home, how do information interfaces affect people's behaviour, the main motivations for regulating energy usage, and the emerging practices when using energy meters. Our findings suggest that visual forms of feedback allow users to better understand energy related information, allowing a relationship between domestic activities and energy usage to form. However, we found that technology usage decreased over time suggesting that the incentives of using this type of device eventually reduce. Home energy meters are found relevant to implement electricity usage regulations, and seen as a valuable, educational and entertaining technology for families. We briefly discuss the implications of our results for the design of new forms of energy meters.

Participants were initially excited about the anticipated potential of visual data analysis for their work, but gradually discovered difficulties that eventually precluded a true integration of the visualization system into their daily work practices. These difficulties are unrelated to the specific visualization system used. We conclude that data analysts can take much better advantage of the benefits of information visualization systems when these systems are redesigned to be complementary products of current data analysis and workflow systems, rather than being stand-alone products as is currently the case. Our study offers some insights about how this complementarity can be achieved.

Research paper thumbnail of Do four eyes see better than two? Collaborative versus individual discovery in data visualization systems

Based on previous research, one system is considered more transparent than the other in terms of visual representation and functionality. We found that people who worked in groups were more correct in their answers for objective questions, based on searching a large dataset. These results held for the more transparent system, but not the less transparent system. In a second task, groups were more accurate in their results for a free data discovery task. Again, these results held for the more transparent system only. Subjects using this system also produced results that were higher in complexity but judged lower in importance. Groups and individuals did not differ. We suggest that given the right visualization system, groups do better than individuals in finding more accurate results, but not necessarily increased or more meaningful results.

The results suggest that the expropriation effect is dominant at any level of ownership concentration. Furthermore, bank ownership is positively associated with the explanatory power of earnings for returns, being consistent with the role of banks as shareholders that actively monitor the firm’s business performance. This effect is similar regardless of whether the bank is the major shareholder of the firm or not.

Trace elements present in the composition as well as in the lead white highlights were imaged by 2D scanning XRF. Mineral phases were determined in a fully noninvasive way using a special l-XRD diffractometer. Phase proportions were estimated by Rietveld refinement. The analytical results obtained will contribute to differentiate lead white qualities and to highlight the artist's technique.

Despite the fact that the system was neither fully integrated with their current software tools nor with their existing data analysis practices, analysts identified a number of key benefits that visualization systems provide to their work. These benefits for the most part occurred when analysts went beyond their habitual and well-mastered data analysis routines and engaged in creative discovery processes. We analyze the conditions under which these benefits arose, to inform the design of visualization systems that can better assist the work of administrative data analysts.

After being translocated across the membrane by Wzx, each repeat unit is polymerized by Wzy to form a glycan chain. In this study, we demonstrate the need of the corresponding enzyme transferring the initial HexNAc to undecaprenol phosphate (lipid carrier), together with the corresponding O-antigen polymerase (Wzy), to produce the Aeromonas hydrophila O:34-antigen. We suggest, the concerted action of WecA or P enzyme (UDP-HexNAc: polyprenol-P HexNAc-1-P transferase) and Wzy is involved in the mechanism responsible for the A. hydrophila O-antigen polymerization.
