In addition, the TMP lignin, TMP EL, was subjected to a treatment with bleaching agent to obtain a bleached lignin, TMP ELB. The three lignin samples were all characterized by thioacidolysis and 13 C-NMR spectroscopy. Comparison of these lignin samples provided evidence about the behaviour of lignin towards alkaline hydrogen peroxide bleaching. It has been demonstrated that the bleaching does not affect the overall structure of lignin. The only one major change of the lignin moiety is elimination of coniferaldehyde end structures, which would be an important contribution to the brightening of pulp.

The hydroxyl group content of six lignins, analyzed in the course of an International Round Robin... more The hydroxyl group content of six lignins, analyzed in the course of an International Round Robin effort have been determined using 'H-, 31 P-NMR, and FTIR spectroscopies. Two acetylated lignins were examined by J3 C-NMR. In addition, the total OH group Contents were determined by saponification of acetylated lignins followed by GC analysis of the acetate groups released. The phenolic OH groups were determined by difference in the methoxyl content before and after diazomethane methylation. The results obtained from the different methods were correlated by linear equations. When the relative ratios of phenolic to aliphatic OH groups were regressed, very high correlation coefficients were observed. FTIR or ! H-NMR spectroscopy is recommended for routine determination of phenolic OH/aliphatic OH ratios. 3I P-NMR afforded the determination of the stereochemical configuration of ß-O-4 linkages and the phenolic OH contents belonging to G and S units. Similar results for the phenolic and secondary OH group contents were obtained when 13 C-and 3I P-NMR spectroscopies were employed. Experimental The origin and preparation of the lignins was described by Milne et al. (1994). The lignins can be requested for analytical purposes from the

In the case of two antiviral pyridopurine derivatives, 1 and 2, this included essentially the membranes and the nucleic acids. Thus the interactions of 1 and 2 with model membranes and oligonucleotides were studied using NMR spectroscopy. It was found that these hydrophobic molecules can be incorporated into the model membranes at the terminal methyl group level, inducing dynamic perturbations in the bilayer. In the presence of the synthetic oligonucleotide ACATGT, both molecules can intercalate aspecifically in AT and GC systems. Inclusion complexes of 1 and 2 in -cyclodextrins with a 1:1 stoichiometry were also prepared. This led us to propose two galenic forms of 1 and 2, i.e. included in phospholipid vesicles or in the form of a -cyclodextrin complex.
