An icebreaker assists a single ship if the ice classification of the ship does not meet the ice conditions. With the increase of the number of ships and escort operations, the risks of collisions between escorting ships (icebreakers) and escorted ships have also increased. In view of this, a calculation model of the safety distance and collision risks between escorting and escorted ships is proposed in this paper in order to facilitate safe navigation in Arctic ice-covered waters. The aim of the paper is to analyze features of navigation concerning icebreakers and escorted ships in escort operations under continuous icebreaking conditions, where a quantitative model is proposed to calculate safety distances under varying ice conditions based on the shipfollowing theory. The proposed model is able to quantify safety distance intervals at an acceptable collision frequency under varying ice conditions, as well as the movement characteristics of icebreakers and escorted ships. A case study is carried out to calculate the safety distance between "YONG SHENG" and "50 LET POBEDY". The results show that the model can accurately calculate the safety distance between "YONG SHENG" and "50 LET POBEDY", which can provide theoretical guidance for ice navigation.

The peculiarities of the oil movement caused by flotation and turbulence in the deep sea were considered on the basis of assumption that the oil dispersed on the separate drops. It is shown that the oil which is coming to the surface is divided into separate clusters in accordance with the sizes of the drops. Mathematical expressions were obtained that permitted us to evaluate the sizes of oil drops and clusters as well as oil concentration depending on time. The analysis of experimental data confirmed the theoretical results while using the diesel oil. Its drops had sizes from 0.10 to 1.34 mm. The diesel oil concentration in clusters corresponds to theoretical predictions.

This is a great concern to navigators. Recent crashes of ferries with large numbers of human victims have occurred because of navigator errors or because of their inability to make adequate decisions in an unexpectedly arisen emergency. This paper presents a possible method for quantitative estimation of the "human factor" based on analysis of the physical and mental conditions of the operator and the working environment.

There is the danger of emergency, namely, the collision with an icebreaker or the ahead vessel, when ones stop before insuperable ice obstacle or because the engine trouble. The paper contents analysis of the vessel braking process and formulation of the equation that gives possibility modelling this process and evaluating the distance that is necessary for safe stopping of vessel in dependence on its characteristics and ice conditions. Outcomes of investigation will be applicable for the caravan of cargo vessels forming while the icebreaker assistance.

Model takes into account the mass of ice, added mass of sea water and the effects of the wind and current on the ice field in form the friction on its upper and underwater surfaces and frontal resistance on its end (forward and backward) surfaces. Results of performed the steady wind drift of the ice fields modelling show the drift velocity exceeds considerable known velocity of a compact ice cover wind drift. Drifting ice field has the certain kinetic energy that should be released when collision with unmovable obstacle and spent on brittle breakdown of part of the ice field. Volume of formed small ice pieces (fragments of ice field) was estimated by comparison of the specific energy of the sea ice brittle destruction and the kinetic energy of drifting ice field. Article presents the results of estimation of possible volu...

When the icebreaker or an ahead vessel stops before the insuperable ice obstacle or because of engine trouble, the danger of an emergency appears, namely of collision with the icebreaker or the ahead ship, if the interval between them is not sufficient for effective braking and stopping. The paper presents the equation that describes the ship braking process within an ice channel and includes the thrust of the propeller that works under the reverse regime. The specific of this regime is the following: the ship continues the motion ‘forwards' and the propeller rotates ‘backwards’. An analytical method for description of the ship propeller work on the reverse regime is absent because of the detached flow on its blades. The paper describes the developed empirical method of this r...
