It is necessary to locate the position of the impacted tooth in order to carry out a proper treatment plan. Various clinical and radiologic methods have been carried out to localize the position of the impacted tooth. The most commonly used methods include the parallax / tube shift, right angle technique, occlusal and the panoramic radiographs. This article reviews the various radiographic techniques and summarizes the current literature about the localization of impacted maxillary canine. This study confirms that the single panoramic radiograph is adequate to localize the position of the impacted maxillary canine, provided that both the magnification index and the vertical restriction criteria are used.

Blended learning is a new teaching–learning method that combines online activity along with face-to-face activity. Flipped classroom approach is the use of Web-enabled strategies that free up class time to allow teachers to spend more time guiding their students. Aim: To assess the impact of flipped classroom approach on the teaching–learning outcomes of dental undergraduates. Settings and Design: A prospective comparative educational intervention was conducted in the Oral Medicine and Radiology department of a private dental college in Belagavi. Methods and Materials: Forty third-year undergraduates were equally allocated into the traditional learning group (20) and flipped classroom learning group (20). A pretest/posttest format was employed with mandatory feedback. For flipped classroom approach, an audio/video lecture of 10 minutes duration was shared through learning management software. The assessment was MCQs and case-based. Statistical Analysis: Mann–Whitney U and Wilcoxon matched-pairs tests were used for intergroup and intragroup comparisons, respectively. Results: The mean posttest score was significantly higher in flipped classroom method than in the traditional method (P = 0.0001). Performance on case-based questions was highly statistically significant in the flipped classroom group with a mean rank of 29.8 (P < 0.001). Intragroup comparison between the mean pretest and posttest scores in the flipped classroom showed a high statistical significance (P = 0.0001). Conclusions: Flipped classroom teaching should be recommended as it has the advantages of providing students with a pace of learning, peer learning, instant feedback, and using classroom time effectively. Faculty have to invest time, but nothing is greater than a meaningful teaching–learning experience.

Diagnosis is based on the major and minor clinical and radiographic criteria. Dentist plays a major role in the diagnosis of this disease due to the oral and maxillofacial manifestations of the syndrome. In some cases, jaw cysts are diagnosed by routine radiographs advised by the dentists. Odontogenic keratocysts in such syndromic patients will be multiple and extensive and in some cases results in cortical expansion and facial disfigurement. Thorough clinical examination and investigations prompt an early confirmation of the syndrome, which is very essential to avoid morbidity associated with the syndrome. Here, we report a case of multiple odontogenic cysts in a 16-year-old patient which later was diagnosed as a case of Gorlin Goltz syndrome.

Population-based mass screening of oral cancer appears to be a promising health promotion strategy with significant increase in survival rate. However, the current protocol comprising conventional visual inspection and palpation of oral soft tissues for the early detection of premalignant or malignant changes appears to be deficient. 1 Neoplastic epithelial cells tend to have an altered nuclearcytoplasmic ratio. Dehydration with acetic acid highlights this nuclear density and imparts an "acetowhite" appearance to tissue. This phenomenon can be further amplified by replacing conventional lighting with diffuse blue-white chemiluminescent illumination. This article aims to review the usefulness of this screening technology in early detection of oral cancer. The oral lumenoscopy has been proposed to be a method to improve oral screening methods which assist in the identification, evaluation and monitoring of oral mucosal changes. It is a simple, inexpensive and objective method that can provide real-time result for the detection of oral neoplasia which can be used in day to day practice by general dentist.

There are approximately 5,000 individual phytochemicals which have been identified. These interfere with multiple important cellular pathways and play an important role in maintaining balance between health and disease. This article aims to provide awareness of various additive and synergistic effects of these natural occurring chemical substances (phytochemicals) found in various fruits and vegetables. Their mechanism of action in preventing various chronic diseases and cancer is also been highlighted in this article. Grouping plant foods by color provides simplification, but it is also important as a method to help consumer′s make-wise food choices and promote health. We believe phytochemicals can be best acquired through whole-food consumption and not through the pills or an extracts.

Odontogenic keratocyst has been the topic of numerous investigators and is known for its potentially aggressive behavior and significant rate of recurrences.1OKC cyst often occurs as a solitary lesion at the angle of the mandible, however in some instances, multiple such cysts may occur in association with a syndrome called “Nevoid basal cell syndrome”.1These patients have propensity to develop multiple neoplasm including basal cell carcinoma and medulloblastoma. Hence early diagnosis and treatment is of utmost importance in reducing the severity of long-term sequelae of this syndrome. Here we present a case of multiple odontogenic keratocysts with nevi and narrowed ribs which has profound relevance to specialist in Oral Medicine and Radiology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Research paper thumbnail of Estimation of serum beta carotene levels in patients with oral submucous fibrosis in India

Journal of Oral Science, 2011

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, insidious and disabling condition affecting the oral... more Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, insidious and disabling condition affecting the oral cavity, being especially prevalent in India and South East Asia. However, considering its high prevalence and potential to undergo malignant transformation, OSMF has not been widely investigated with respect to levels of antioxidants, especially beta carotene. In the present study, an attempt was made to analyze serum levels of beta carotene in 45 patients with oral submucous fibrosis and 45 age-and sexmatched controls. The serum beta carotene level was estimated using the Bradley and Hornbeck method. The serum beta carotene level was significantly lower in the patients with oral submucous fibrosis than in the controls. When the values were compared between different disease stages, the maximum reduction of beta carotene was evident for Grade III OSMF, as compared with Grade I and II. From the present results, it is evident that beta carotene plays an important role in the pathogenesis of OSMF, and that its level decreases with disease progression. OSMF patients should be treated with a diet rich in beta carotene to reduce disease severity and progression towards malignancy.

Clinically, it is characterised by cutaneous papules or nodules on the head and neck. Literature reveals very few cases of this entity in the oral mucosa. Here, we report a case of ALHE in a 25 year-old woman, who presented with a painless, 5mm x 5mm, sub mucosal erythematous nodule on left angle of mouth at lower lip. Histological examination of lip biopsy specimens revealed an increase in small vessels. The vascular walls consist of prominent endothelial cells with a histiocytoid appearance, which protruded into the lumen. Many eosinophils and lymphocytes were also seen around the vessels. The diagnosis of ALHE was made from the above findings.

It is characterized by adenomatous intestinal polyps, multiple osteomas in the skull, maxillae, mandible, and multiple cutaneous and subcutaneous masses (epidermoids and desmoid). Intestinal polyps, if not treated, have 100% chance of becoming malignant. We report a case of a 25-year-old female patient with Gardner's syndrome, with clinical manifestations including impacted supernumerary teeth, odontomes, sebaceous cyst on the scalp, and osteomas. It is important for the general dental practitioners to be aware of the clinical and radiological characteristics of Gardner's syndrome.
