Research paper thumbnail of Role of functionalized graphene quantum dots in hydrogen evolution reaction: A density functional theory study

International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2022

Rapid advances in the field of catalysis require a microscopic understanding of the catalytic mec... more Rapid advances in the field of catalysis require a microscopic understanding of the catalytic mechanisms. However, in recent times, experimental insights in this field have fallen short of expectations. Furthermore, experimental searches of novel catalytic materials are expensive and time-consuming, with no guarantees of success. As a result, density functional theory (DFT) can be quite advantageous in advancing this field because of the microscopic insights it provides and thus can guide experimental searches of novel catalysts. Several recent works have demonstrated that low-dimensional materials can be very efficient catalysts. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have gained much attention in past years due to their unique properties like low toxicity, chemical inertness, biocompatibility, crystallinity, etc. These properties of GQDs which are due to quantum confinement and edge effects facilitate their applications in various fields like sensing, photoelectronics, catalysis, and many more. Furthermore, the properties of GQDs can be enhanced by doping and functionalization. In order to understand the effects of functionalization by oxygen and boron based groups on the catalytic properties relevant to the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER), we perform a systematic study of GQDs functionalized with the oxygen (O), borinic acid (BC 2 O), and boronic acid (BCO 2). All calculations that included geometry optimization, electronic and adsorption mechanism, were carried out using the Gaussian16 package, employing the hybrid functional B3LYP, and the basis set 6-31G(d,p). With the variation in functionalization groups in GQDs, we observe significant changes in their electronic properties. The adsorption energy E ads of hydrogen over O-GQD, BC 2 O-GQD, and BCO 2-GQD is-0.059 eV,-0.031 eV and-0.032 eV respectively. Accordingly, Gibbs free energy (ΔG) of hydrogen adsorption is extraordinarily near the ideal value (0 eV) for all the three types of functionalized GQDs. Thus, the present work suggests pathways for experimental realization of low-cost and multifunctional GQDs based catalysts for clean and renewable hydrogen energy production.

Most receivers for symbol detection need channel state information (CSI), however estimating CSI is complex for THz bands. Hence, in this paper, we design and analyze low complexity THz receiver without considering the CSI for symbol detection. The rate adaptation for THz communication systems is also analysed for the distance attenuation. Since, at THz the performance is sensitive to distance. We consider modified transmitted-reference (MTR) pulsed and optimal lth-order energy detector (OED) based THz communication system. Simulations are carried out to show effectiveness of MTR and OED for pulse-based THz band wireless systems by considering the effect of distance, data rate, and absorption by molecular gases.

The study involves the use of integrated measurement techniques mainly high-pressure porosity (HPP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform electron microscopy (FTIR). Approximately, 13 samples were analysed to understand the mineralogy of this shale and it was observed that it is very clayey in nature with major traces of Illite and minor traces of rutile and kaolinite. The other measurements (i.e., SEM and HPP) were done on two specific samples which confirm the presence of clay-rich porous minerals with high organic matter content.

Research paper thumbnail of Numerical solution for system of Cauchy type singular integral equations with its error analysis in complex plane

Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2018

In this paper, the problem of finding numerical solution for a system of Cauchy type singular int... more In this paper, the problem of finding numerical solution for a system of Cauchy type singular integral equations of first kind with index zero is considered. The analytic solution of such system is known. But it is of limited use as it is a nontrivial task to use it practically due to the presence of singularity in the known solution itself. Therefore, a residual based Galerkin method is proposed with Legendre polynomials as basis functions to find its numerical solution. The proposed method converts the system of Cauchy type singular integral equations into a system of linear algebraic equations which can be solved easily. Further, Hadamard conditions of well-posedness are established for system of Cauchy singular integral equations as well as for system of linear algebraic equations which is obtained as a result of approximation of system of singular integral equations with Cauchy kernel. The theoretical error bound is derived which can be used to obtain any desired accuracy in the approximate solution of system of Cauchy singular integral equations. The derived theoretical error bound is also validated with the help of numerical examples.

Tapping these reserves using cost-effective technologies can really change the India's energy supply and value chain. Cambay Shale of Cambay Basin has been proved as the most prominent Indian Shale reserve and in this work an attempt has been made to understand the geographical and mineralogical distribution of this Shale. A sample study on Cambay Shale of North Tectonic Block of Cambay Basin has been ascertained to understand the mineralogy, porosity and maturity with respect to depth.

India is having enormous untapped shale oil/gas potential of 96 TCF risked technically recoverable shale gas and 3.8 billion barrel risked technically recoverable shale oil. But, its development is still nascent and not very much conducive due to insufficient data availability and limited exploration and exploitation activities. The present study is an attempt to minimize the existing data gap and providing useful information pertaining to shale geochemistry, sweet spots delineation, geomechanics and fracability. Shale has an important feature of acting as both source as well as reservoir for hydrocarbon generation, expulsion and accumulation. Demarcating sweet spots are helpful in identifying these prospective hydrocarbons bearing zones in shales and hence in locating favorable drilling targets. High content of organic matter, kerogen richness, clay content, shale geomechanics are the k...

Lamb’s model is used to predict the occurrence of various mode to support the experimental observations by considering the elastic continuum model and fixed boundary condition. The presence of medium significantly affects the phonon peaks and results into the broadening of the modes. The linewidth is found to depend inversely on the size, similar to that reported experimentally.

Research paper thumbnail of Structural phase transitions and conducting properties in Bimetallic sulfates

Acta Crystallographica Section A Foundations and Advances, 2014

Bimetallic sulfate minerals, hydrated as well as anhydrous are important multifunctional material... more Bimetallic sulfate minerals, hydrated as well as anhydrous are important multifunctional materials which exhibit interesting properties like fast-ion conduction, ferroelectricity and magnetism with variation in temperature [1,2,3]. These properties are generally entwined with structural phase transitions and show structural frameworks made of interconnection of octahedra and tetrahedra [1]. Bimetallic sulfates, indeed are intercalation compounds of alkali ions generated by these frameworks and they possess high ionic conductivity [1]. In the present study, anhydrous and hydrous compounds of Na6M(SO4)4, (M=Mn, Ni, Co) were synthesized to understand the structural phase transitions and its relation to fast-ion conducting properties. Na6Mn(SO4)4, is monoclinic, space group P21/c with Z=2 and is isostructural to its Co and Ni analogues and shows high ionic conductivity and structural phase transition > 4500C. Na6Co(SO4).2H2O, Na6Ni(SO4).2H2O are isostructural with triclinic system ha...
