By focusing on the IAHR membership of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1957, the book reconsiders the impact of the Iron Curtain . Valerio Severino examines unpublished international correspondences, bureaucratic requests, confidential reports submitted by the delegates after their participation in congresses in Western Europe and the USA. Facts and insights about leading Hungarian scholars and internal processes of the IAHR are reconstructed in detail. Through doing so, Severino is able to evaluate the permeability of the Iron Curtain, the exchange of knowledge between the opposing blocs, the ideological control exercised through the Academy and the ways in which academics subjected their work to this obligation.

This essay brings together questions, arguments, and narratives in the framework of which the issue has been addressed and expressed. By adopting the ‘discursive research’ approach, I seek to trace the production of the meaning of ‘freedom’ that is legitimated and shared in the Academic Study of Religion. I shall give a breakdown of this process of meaning-production along the following lines: the authority, the rights, and the impartiality of science particularly with regard to both the concept of ‘(Religious)Value-Free’ and the program of the ‘academic freedom from religion’. Besides I describe a counter-narrative based on what I may call ‘Non-Religious-Value’-Free and the academic program of the ‘autonomy of religion’. Eventually, I acknowledge a complementarity between the two narratives and between the notions of facts-given and god/church-given freedom. The central takeaway of the essay is the recognition of a binary opposition between the senses of freedom along these lines.

As far as the case study of the Alalà formula is concerned, the paper addresses the question of its use in the funerary ceremonies of the Italian Fasces of Combat, as well as its substitution for the national rite of the Appello del caduto, i.e. the ‘Roll Call of the Fallen Soldiers’ in 1921 by the newborn Fascist National Party. On the basis of Italian newspapers, mainly Il Popolo d’Italia, the journal founded by Mussolini, this study provides specific documentary evidence both for this passage from the Alalà to the Roll Call rite and the related political-funerary literature.

At the eve of the rise of Fascism in Italy, and from the beginning of the Fifties, Pettazzoni was engaged in the question of “fundamental religious diversity”. In his answer, he addressed the clash between two types of religions, the “religion of the state” and of the “individual” with a comparative historical approach. He considered it the “conflict of yesterday and of today, one of all times”, and traced its origins back to one of the milestones in the history of persecutions, that is the repression of the Bacchanalia by the Roman state and that of Christianity. The paper recalls this theory in the debate on the religious persecutions and focuses on the tentative solutions of the conflict and their failures, among them the achievement of a religious unity in a Christian state.

It intends to take a closer look at this issue by examining three prominent cases, the de-clericalisation of the Savoyard Monarchy’s Constitution Day and the so-called Albertine Statute, the Italian ‘Jubilee of the Fatherland’, and the blessing of the flags according to military discipline. In doing so, I will address the question of the ‘civil’ and ‘purely civil’ religion.

As a matter of civil or political religion, this ritual is studied by political scientists and sociologists and restricted to a specific national context. For the first time, a comparative method of history of religions is applied in order to retrace the transnational diffusion of this nationalist ritual from the Napoleonic era, passing through the fascist European experience, to the present day. The changing of the aesthetic forms in which the ritual took and takes shape, by producing images of the community gathered, outlines an aesthetic realization of ‘imagined communities.’ This outline will be examined with reference to Benedict Anderson’s theory on the origin and spread of nationalism.

Mingling approaches of both political science and history of religions, this study constitutes an introduction to a new understanding — which remained hidden in Pettazzoni’s texts — of Fascism as a degeneration of state religiousness. While Fascism is an example of the sacralization of politics (according to one of the leading historians of Fascist ideology, Emilio Gentile), Pettazzoni showed how in other ways Fascism perpetuated the pre-Christian crisis of the religious state.

Brelich, Tra gli asfodeli dell 'Elisio. Carteggio 1935-1959, a cura di Andrea Alessandri, traduzione delle lettere Andrea Nagy, Editori Riuniti University Press, Roma 2011. ISBN 9788864730646.
