Research paper thumbnail of Effectiveness of adolescent family life education AFLE program on adolescent girls knowledge attitude and practice in a rural community of Vellore District TamilNadu South India

Shodhganga, 2008

The word adolescence is derived from a Latin verb “adolescere” which means to grow into maturity. It also means “to emerge”. Adolescence is a formative and the most fascinating period of human life that marks the transition from childhood to adulthood and during this period, new adjustments in life situations will have to be made. Stanley Hall (1904) had characterized adolescence as a period of “storm and stress”. Adolescence is also described as a period of sexual development (Barber, 2004). The present study had shown that the Adolescent Family Life Education program was effective in terms of increasing the knowledge, attitude and practice of rural adolescent girls about family life and thereby promote the health of adolescent girls. Basic information on family life is important for adolescents. The findings of the study were consistent with the literature and have strong support from studies conducted throughout the world. However South Indian studies were found to be scarce in the literature especially the studies done in rural areas. AFLE may be the only place where adolescents can learn accurate information about family life and can practice the skills necessary to maintain good sexual and reproductive health with a positive attitude. Healthy adolescents promote the health of women as they become mothers which in turn lead to a healthy new generation as they reproduce their children. There is a need for community health nurses to take active part in preparing the adolescent girls for family life. If the girls are prepared with adequate knowledge about family life, they will develop a positive attitude to cope with the pubertal changes which in turn helps them develop a healthy attitude towards family life. Thus the adolescents adopt safe and healthy sexual and reproductive practices during adolescence. The community health nurse have a pivotal role and they can make a difference in providing adolescent family life education and can make the adolescent health care services accessible and worthwhile for the adolescent population.

Mixed methods research involves collecting analysing and mixing quantitative and qualitative data in the single research process. It is a natural and practical approach. Because of the complexity of health problems, mixed methods research is needed today in the field of health profession. In this article, the author describes about mixed methods research, the value of this research approach, the types of mixed methods research, its design and the various guidelines and steps involved in designing and conducting mixed methods research. It also outlines the strengths and limitations of the new approach as well as the challenges ahead in conducting mixed methods research.

Student t-test and ANOVA were used to identify the difference in practice based on demographic variables. Results: Overall mean score of readiness for practice among pregraduate nurses was found to be 58.5 ± 5.58. There was significant difference in readiness for practice in terms of their religion and program of study. Conclusion: To facilitate the smooth transition from student to professional, a planned preparatory program may be useful at the course completion.

Methods: A true experimental design (pretest posttest control group) was chosen with the scope of improving the internal validity of the study. Multistage random sampling was used to select a sample of 30 participants, 15 each in experimental and control groups. VATP regarding screening of mental illnesses was developed by the investigator and validated by the experts. Sociodemographic profile, a checklist to assess the participants' experience with mentally ill patients, a structured knowledge questionnaire, a set of case vignettes, and community attitudes toward Mentally Ill-III (CAMI-III) was used for data collection. Pretest was conducted to measure the baseline variables, then VATP on screening of mental illnesses was delivered, and the posttest was administered at three points, that is, immediately after VATP to assess the extent to which the participants have learnt the information, 15 days after VATP to assess the level of retention of the learnt information and 45 days after VATP to measure the outcomes of the study. Results: A comparison of posttest mean score differences between the groups revealed that the participants of the experimental group made a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) in the knowledge and attitude than those of control group. Comparison of pretest and posttest mean scores within the experimental group showed that the VATP has made a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) in knowledge and attitude. Conclusions: Innovative and realistic teaching strategies to be initiated to improve mental health literacy among the general population.
