Maize, a staple crop worldwide, is highly susceptible to drought stress, leading to reduced seed germination, stunted growth and ultimately diminished yields. Addressing this issue, in this study various phytohormones and polyamines were used as priming agents for seeds to evaluate its performance to mitigate drought stress in maize seed germination and vigour. It plays crucial roles in regulating plant growth and development, as well as responses to various environmental stresses, including drought. These hormones modulate physiological and biochemical processes, leading to adaptive changes that helps maize plants to cope with water scarcity. Methods: The experiment was conducted by exposing maize seeds primed with different phytohormones and polyamines in optimum along with non primed seeds (control) to various levels of PEG concentration ...

The seeds of this crop show dormancy and are not able to germinate as and when required. Investigation of the effect of gibberellic acid (GA 3) in breaking the dormancy of black gram seeds is the objective of this experiment. To break the dormancy, seeds were soaked with different concentrations of GA 3 along with hydro primed seeds and control seeds for 3 h and shade dried. Evaluation of germination and seedling growth of these primed seeds under controlled environment conditions revealed that the seed treated with 350 ppm of GA 3 observed in maximum physiological parameters. Hence, the treatment of seeds with 350 ppm of GA 3 is an effective dormancy-breaking treatment in black gram.

As the germination is one of the critical stages, this study was to assess the impact of elevated carbon dioxide (eCO 2) and associated temperature stress on germination of rice. The study was conducted using the rice genotype CO 51 in artificially induced eCO 2 condition using open-top chamber (OTC). The efficiency of seed priming treatment with salicylic acid (SA), citric acid (CA), ascorbic acid (AsA) and distilled water (hydropriming) to alleviate stress due to eCO 2 and temperature were also studied. SA 25 mg l −1 and AsA 100 mg l −1 enhanced germination, other seed quality parameters along with αamylase activity. Also, the activity of antioxidant enzymes like catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase was increased. These parameters positively affected the germination and growth by mitigating the effect of oxidative stress induced under eCO 2 conditions. So, SA, CA and AsA can be effectively used for maintaining seed quality parameters and seedling growth during the stresses.
