Research paper thumbnail of The 210Pb Bremsstrahlung In The Background Of Lead Shields

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2007

ABSTRACT Contemporary theories of dark matter predict that weakly interacting massive particles i... more ABSTRACT Contemporary theories of dark matter predict that weakly interacting massive particles interact with matter by nuclear recoils leaving in the detector energies up 50 keV. The bremsstrahlung of 210Pb contributes to this spectral region. The 46.5 keV gamma intensity of 210Pb in the background can be easily reduced by inner lining, but the bremsstrahlung from the 1.2 MeV maximal energy beta decay will reach the lead shielded Ge detector. The spectrum of this bremsstrahlung is calculated by numerically fitting the beta spectrum and integrating the Koch-Motz formula. The absorption of the bremsstrahlung spectrum in the lead and detection efficiencies for Ge detector are calculated by the effective solid angle algorithm, using correction for photopeak/compton ratio of cross sections in Ge. By comparison with the measured spectrum, it is shown, that for the lead with 25 Bq/kg of 210Pb, up to 500 keV, the bremsstrahlung contribution to the background is about 20%. The calculated bremsstrahlung intensity is in good agreement with the experimental result derived in Max Planck Institute, Heidelberg..

The magnetic moments of the single valence particle, intermediate mass, isotopes 67 Ni͑np 21 1͞2 ; 1͞2 2 ͒ and 69 Cu͑pp 1 3͞2 ; 3͞2 2 ͒ are measured to be 10.601͑5͒ m N and 12.84͑1͒ m N , respectively, revealing only a small deviation from the neutron p 1͞2 single-particle value in the former and a large deviation from the proton p 3͞2 single-particle value in the latter. Quantitative interpretation is given in terms of core polarization and meson-exchange currents.

Radon is the alpha emitter and decays to short-lived daughters (Po, Pb, Bi and Po). Radon partially decays in material where it has been generated and partially moves rapidly by concentration-driven diffusion into the open air. The presence of determined radon activity concentration in the atmosphere is the natural contamination. Sources of radon in flats are: soil under and round the object, building’s material and water and gas used in household. Radon is entering the home by emanation from walls, floor and ceiling, through underlying soil and from things and materials that are in the room. Underlying soil is the main source of indoor radon. However, building’s materials also may contribute to elevated indoor radon concentration, especially in combination with low ventilation. In this paper the results of the first radon mapping in Vojvodina are presented Indoor radon activity concentration in air has been measured at the whole area ...

The obtained results showed that the averages of radiation hazard parameters for the fertilizers are higher than acceptable level for radium equivalent activity (Raeq), representative level index (Iγ), external hazard index (Hex) and absorbed dose rate (D) [1]. Based on the measured values of the activity concentration of radionuclides in soils, the activity concentrations of radionuclides for most commonly grown crops in Vojvodina were calculated.

In this paper radiation levels of radium and cesium in Lucerne will be presented. It is a perennial plant with a deep root system and it is widely grown throughout the world as forage for cattle. The samples of Lucerne were taken from twelve different locations in Vojvodina in the summer period July-September 2004. The samples were specially dried on the air and after that ground, powdered and mineralized by method of dry burning on the temperature of 450°C. Gamma spectrometry measurements of the ash were performed by means of actively shielded germanium detector with maximal background reduction. For cesium 137Cs 10 mBq/kg order of magnitude detection limits were achieved.

The improved geometry of the MIREDO scintillation detection system will enable the direct measurement of the cross section of the muon induced reactions with the sample material.

After the earthquake and the tsunami of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors in March 2011 activists, lobbyist and reporters were quick to expose nuclear technology and demand if not an immediate closure, than at least a gradual phasing out of nuclear power plants. Further research on topics such as the safety of nuclear power plants, the environmental and social effects of radioactive contamination, and the potential of nuclear energy as a world power source has a critical role in this ongoing debate in order to reduce consumption of fossil fuels, and continuing rise in national energy demands for providing powerful motivators in the search for alternative energy sources.
