This paper presents a cross-disciplinary view that integrates the fields of human factors, professional education, electronic systems on chip, resilience and security for industrial applications, technology ethics and society, and standards. After explaining the efforts and challenges in these fields, this paper shows a methodology for crossdisciplinary technology that integrates the technical committees in Cluster 4, Industrial Electronics Society. A project, which was launched in March 2020, implements a 'Proof of Concept' trial of the methodology. INDEX TERMS Cross-disciplinary technology, electronic systems on chip, human factors, resilience and security for industrial applications, professional education, technology ethics, standards, sustainable society.

It inherently acts as a key enabling technology for a diverse number of applications and includes the latest developments in intelligent and computer control systems, robotics, factory communications and automation, flexible manufacturing, data acquisition and signal processing, vision systems, and power electronics, among others, as well as the educational and human factors involved. This makes IE inherently multidisciplinary, and, with many interconnected synergies, it plays a key role as an enabling technology in multiple domestic, biomedical, transportation, and industrial applications.

After explaining efforts and challenges from human factors, professional education, electronic systems on chip, technology ethics and society, and standards, we suggest a methodology for cross-disciplinary technology integrating the above-mentioned fields, in which the technical committees in Cluster 4, Industrial Electronics Society, play an active part.

The process of sampling is extremely important because it is the only one that connects the real world with the digital world. In addition, the proposed technique can be embedded into sensors, allowing applications in sensor networks and sensors data fusion architectures like Internet of Things. A simplified version of these algorithms has been proposed as a standard for transducer signal feature extraction. These algorithms are analysed and experimental results are tackled for representative signals, in different fields.

The Standards Group of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) has been active in standards... more The Standards Group of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) has been active in standards for industrial electronics in recent years, focusing on sensors and sensors networks, real-time industrial communications and industrial agents in the automation fields. It has also participated and collaborated with other IEEE societies such as the Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) in the IEEE 1451 sensor networks standards family, and with government entities such as the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This paper gives a brief synopsis of IES standards activities and the trends it sees in industrial electronics standardization in the coming emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT)/Industrial IoT (IIoT), 5G communications, industrial wireless and possibly transportation electrification. All these technologies are expected to be disruptive to the industry in the coming years and standards must be generated to be effective and beneficial to industry and society. The IES Standards Group anticipates more contributions to the IEEE 1451 standards family, industrial agents, industrial wireless applications with NIST, and possibly with standards activities within Industry 4.0 in the coming years.
