This is study is aimed at the effect of long-term tillage practice and cropping on physicochemical properties of soils in Southern guinea savannah area of Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from a continuously cropped rice field using the random uniform grid method at depths between 0-15 cm, 15-25 cm, 25-50 cm and 50-75 cm. Samples were collected in five replicates, mixed and homogenized. Soil samples collected at the 0-15 cm, 25-50 cm depth were Sandy clay loam while those of 15-25 cm and 50-75 cm depths are sandy clay and sandy loam. The soil hydraulic conductivity for the zone of 25 to 50 cm had values ranging between 0.23 and 1.51 cm/hr. while the fourth zone considered had values ranging between 0.49 and 0.77 cm/hr. It was concluded that the farmers should conduct physical and chemical analysis of the soils they wish to carryout farming activities to decide the type of fertilizer to be used.

The importance of income generating activities to rural livelihood cannot be overemphasized. The paper examined the involvement of rural youth in non-agricultural income generating activities as well as factors influencing their involvement in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Multi stage random sampling was used to collect data from 247 respondents. Respondents participated in number of non-agricultural income generating activities with petty trade being the most common. Majority of respondents were married, educated up to high school had low achievement motivation and medium economic motivation. There were significant influences of socioeconomic and psychological characteristics of respondents on their involvement in non-agricultural income generating activities (R 2 =0.582). Marital status (t=4.284), family occupation (t=3.668), respondents' education (t=-4.705), employment status (t=3.607), rural life preference (t=3.102), achievement motivation (t=5.853), economic motivation (t=5.358), fatalism-scienticism (t=-5.197), mass media exposure (t=6.998) and extension contact (t=-4.698) were predictors of involvement in non-agricultural income generating activities engaged by rural youth at 1 percent significant level while 1/3 of the total accountable variation was explained by achievement motivation. Governmental and nongovernmental organizations should take all income generating activities engaged in by rural youth as well as the identified factors influencing them into consideration when initiating and embarking on programmes targeted at improving their livelihoods.

The study was conducted in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Two communities were purposively selected due to their population capacity and abundance of crop farmers. Ninety respondents were randomly interviewed from the list of arable crop farmers compiled by ADP for these communities. The result of this study revealed that most of the farmers were between 41 to 50 years old, involved in diverse indigenous land management practices, faced with various constraints in these practices and had positive perceptions of the benefits of indigenous land management. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that these indigenous land management practices be improved by research institutes with the view of increasing food production.

The paper examined the participation of rural youth in livelihood activities, their socio-personal characteristics, the relationship between their socio-personal characteristics and their participation in livelihood activities as well as the interrelationships among their socio-personal characteristics. Multi-stage random sampling was used to collect data from 247 respondents through interview schedule. Frequency counts and percentages were used to present data while Pearson product moment correction (PPMC) was used to test relationships. The results revealed that majority of the respondents were from other backward caste (66%), married (72.10%), belonged to joint (57.90%) and medium (50.60%) size families as well as families that were self-employed in agriculture (59.50%). Higher percentages of the respondents and their fathers were educated up to higher school and above. Huge majority (75.71%) of the respondents participated in cereal production while more than half of the respondents were involved in pulse production (56.28%) and petty trading (53.44%). Marital status; fathers' educational attainment; family type and family size had significant relationship with participation in livelihood activities. Inter-correlations among socio-personal characteristics showed that caste was related to marital status and educational attainment. It is concluded that socio-personal attributes of rural youth are related to their participation in livelihood activities. The study recommends that socio-personal variables of present study be considered by rural development policy makers when undertaking programmes aimed at enhancing rural youth's livelihoods.
