Research paper thumbnail of How much information do heterogeneous individuals need to reach an efficient critical mass ?

These social effects may lead to multiple collective states, bringing up coordination problems. The outcome cannot be predicted a priori even in small systems. Depending on the intensity of interactions and the individuals’ learning capacities, non-optimal states may emerge, due to coordination failures. Understanding the emergence of collective states, which comes from the individual behavior of a large number of interacting individuals, is essential for the comprehension of social and industrial organizations. Here we present a study of such collective phenomena using methods of statistical physics and numerical simulations. We explore how the heterogeneity of the individuals, their interactions and learning capacities influence the system’s behavior. Equilibrium properties and dynamics obtained with various learning scenarios are thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, interesting e...

Nowadays, given the availability of data, the tools used for the analysis can be complemented and enriched with new methodologies and techniques that go beyond the traditional approach. The present paper shows the application of the Latent Dirichlet Allocation Models, a well known technique from the area of Natural Language Processing, to search for latent dimensions in the product space of international trade, and their distribution across countries over time. We apply this technique to a dataset of countries' exports of goods from 1962 to 2016. The findings show the possibility to generate higher level classifications of goods based on the empirical evidence, and also allow to study the distribution of those classifications within countries. The latter show interesting insights about countries' trade specialisation.

The study of the “active links”, edges that connect nodes in different states, has been a key element in the analysis of the convergence of the model. Typically, the density of active links, ρ, is used to characterize the system when approaching to absorbing state. However, more information can be extracted from how the active links are distributed across the underlying network. In this paper we study the dynamics of active links in the voter model, from a perspective of complex networks. This approach allows us to understand how the dynamics of the model is mapped in topological features of a dynamical network of active links. We found that certain topological properties of the Active Link Network show salient features related to the dynamics of the model. The Active Link Network goes from a state similar to the underlying random network in the initial state to extremely disas...

We investigate the interplay between the social influence and individual decision to adopt with global interactions, both analytically in the case of an infinite number and numerically in the case of a finite number of agents. We derive exactly necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of single or multiple equilibria as a function of the strength of social influence. In particular, this model encompasses the classical downward sloping demand curve as a particular case. The paper also provides a brief introduction to avalanches and hysteresis loops, and includes extensive bibliographical references.

Its empirical analysis is a complex problem, given the amount of products, countries and years. Nowadays, given the availability of data, the tools used for the analysis can be complemented and enriched with new methodologies and techniques that go beyond the traditional approach. This new possibility opens a research gap, as new, data-driven, ways of understanding international trade, can help our understanding of the underlying phenomena. The present paper shows the application of the Latent Dirichlet allocation model, a well known technique in the area of Natural Language Processing, to search for latent dimensions in the product space of international trade, and their distribution across countries over time. Given a fixed price, agents decide repeatedly whether to buy or not a unit of a good, so as to maximize their expected utilities. We show that the equilibrium reached by the system depends on the nature of the information agents use to estimate their expected utilities.

It may represent a mechanism of wealth distribution but also a social and economic charge because of the cost of the law enforcement system. Sometimes it may be less costly for the society to allow for some level of criminality. A drawback of such policy may lead to a high increase of criminal activity that may become hard to reduce. We investigate the level of law enforcement required to keep crime within acceptable limits and show that a sharp phase transition is observed as a function of the probability of punishment. We also analyze the growth of the economy, the inequality in the wealth distribution (the Gini coefficient) and other relevant quantities under different scenarios of criminal activity and probability of apprehension.
