This article attempts to define the notion of representation by means of a critique of the recept... more This article attempts to define the notion of representation by means of a critique of the reception of the film Fiela se kind (Fiela's child), based on the novel with the same name by Dalene Matthee. It shows how historical facts become subjected to different norms within the fictional space of the novel (and the film) and how the meaning of both is not primarily dependent on the correspondence to historical reality, but is influenced by filmic and novelistic coding, the horizon of expectations of the audience and the social symbolic value of certain places like the farmhouse.

Die aaname is dat hy daardie digterlike stelsel op drie maniere herskryf het, naamlik om deur vermenging nuwe vorme te ontwikkel, deur die uitdrukkingskrag daarvan te verhoog en deur dit plaaslik en Suid-Afrikaans te maak, maar dit terselfdertyd vir homself toe te eien en dit aan te pas binne sy eie poetika. Vier aspekte van die Simbolisme word bespreek, naamlik die simbolistiese werkwyse, Simbolisme en musiek, die simbolistiese toon en die korrespondensies. Die vernaamste bevindings is dat Cloete die uitdrukkingskrag van die Simbolisme vergroot het deur dit te moderniseer, maar ook deur dit te deologiseer - dit wil se deur dit in 'n instrument te omvorm vir die bestudering van Deus, God. Creolization of Symbolism in T T Cloete's poetry This article is an investigation of T T Cloete's rewriting of international Symbolism, the assumption being that he has creolized this poetic system in three ways, namely by developing new forms by mixing, by increasing its expressive power and by making it local and South African, but also by appropriating and adapting it to his own poetical system. After pointing out two indications of creolization in Cloete's work, namely the creative mixing of words and concepts and the mixing of indigenous and colonial language, Symbolism is defined as a deliberate exploitation of ambiguity based on the notion of correspondences between all earthly things. Natural elements are used as metaphors, combined with all the resources of language to suggest a deeper or truer but unformulated second content in a poem. Creolization is here, in accordance with the views of E. Glissant, defined as a rhizomatic understanding of texts in complex webs of relations with three important core meanings, namely mixing of languages, cultures and traditions, a making-local that also entails appropriation and emulation and an expansion of the expressive power of the tradition. The analysis of the ways in which Cloete has transformed the symbolist tradition in poetry along these lines focuses on four aspects of Symbolism, namely the symbolist technique, Symbolism and music, the symbolist tone and the correspondences. Cloete's creolization of the symbolist method is explored in two poems, namely "oopooggebed aan ontbyttafel" (open-eyed prayer at the breakfast table) from Allotroop (1985) and "Insinjes" (Ensigns) from Met die aarde praat (Talking to the earth, 1992). In these poems Cloete evokes a second meaning without really giving it form in the way he uses natural things as metaphors and by subtle allusions to the Symbolists and their favourite colours. The latter poem also shows how Cloete enriches the symbolist tradition with words and concepts from natural science but also transforms it into a way of evoking the in-living of God. The next section links Cloete's symbolist use of bird imagery and bird song to the symbolist equation of music and poetry. In Cloete's poetry the ear is a favourite organ, since it brings disparate elements together. The sound of poetry is in his work a powerful instrument for the expression of the coherence of the whole cosmos and for evoking a second meaning, namely the presence of God in everything. The same goes for the way in which Cloete's poetry deals with the symbolist view of the imminence of death and the passing away of all things. His poetry presents an alternative to mortality by showing a universal interconnectedness and by developing new, modern metaphors for the synthetic power of poetry. One of them is the "laseraspaai" (laser I spy) - a modern instrument for spying out the rich interconnected diversity of creation. This universal interconnectedness, the idea that each thing contains a fine hidden essence of every other thing, is a central tenet of Symbolism and is creolized in Cloete's poetry in a variety of ways and, in his different collections, each time in a different metaphor that underlines this interconnectedness as well as the terrible state of being unconnected : juxtaposition, allotropy, entelegy, idiolect, curiosity. The all-inclusive whole is God, and His presence is evoked in Cloete's poetry in a myriad symbolist ways. Mixing languages and creating new compound words are but two of them. Though it focuses in the small and the local, in Cloete's poetry the unique time and place of every element is illuminated by the illimitable and the universal. Everything has its place in a great chain of being. On the whole, Cloete increases the expressive power of Symbolism not only by modernizing, but also by deologizing it, that is, by turning it into an instrument for the study of Deus, God.

There seems to he an irrepressible urge to metaphorize the relation between the Netherlands and S... more There seems to he an irrepressible urge to metaphorize the relation between the Netherlands and South Africa in the Afrikaans popular imagination, perhaps in order to bridge the growing separation between the two coun tries. Four complexes o f such metaphors, window, fam ily relations, root and landscape, are briefly analysed, with most emphasis on the last cate gory. From a handful o f Afrikaans poems since 1950, and especially from poems by Elizabeth Eybers, Lina Spies and Marlene van Niekerk, it seems possible to reconstruct a descriptive system that underlies poems con trasting the Netherlands (represented by Amsterdam in particular) as a safe, protected space with the South African landscape as open and exposed. Preface This issue of Literator is dedicated to Heilna du Plooy who retires at the end of 2012 as... more Preface This issue of Literator is dedicated to Heilna du Plooy who retires at the end of 2012 as professor of Afrikaans and Dutch literature and literary theory. In a career spanning 35 years she distinguished herself as narratologist, researcher, critic, and apologist for literature. Heilna du Plooy is an artist and poet in her own right, with two poetry collections published besides numerous other poems and short stories in journals. She is very active as a public speaker and apologist for literature and creative writing at reading circles and seminars. She also is a literary translator, her latest translation begin an excellent Afrikaans version of Willem van Toorn's cycle of poems Het stuwmeer (The reservoir 2009a) into Afrikaans. This was published with one of her own essays in the Dutch journal Tirade. As critic her judgement remains in demand on the juries of literary prizes, like the M-Net Prize and the W.A. Hofmeyr Prize. She still serves on the Literary Committee of the SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. Other special assignments include her contribution to T.T. Cloete's Literere terme en teoriee (Literary terms and theories) and her work on the mterdenominational committee for the versification of the Psalms (1995-2003). Currently she is continuing this excellent work as member of the Literary Advisory Committee and literary translator of the new Afrikaans Bible translation. She is a member of international associations such as the Society for the Study of Narrative Literature and the International Society for Dutch studies. She played a leading role in academic societies, in the organisation of conferences and on the editorial boards of journals like Literator, Tydskrif vir Nederlands en Afrikaans and Stilet. In particular, she was very active on the executive of Afrikaans Literature Association. From 1990 to 1998 she served on the advisory board of the Dutch journal Woordwerk, a Christian literary magazine. Recently she was elected vice-president of the Board of Trustees of the Greenwich School of Theology in London. It is as lecturer and researcher that Heilna made her biggest creative contribution to the study of literature, both theoretically and in the field of Afrikaans and modern Dutch literature. Her many publications are eloquent testimony to this: books like Verhaalteorie in die twintigste eeu (Narrative theory in the twentieth century), numerous book chapters and articles in accredited journals, both in South Africa and internationally. Her publications are always thoughtful and thorough. She has a refined literary sensibility and can articulate her insights cogently. Her creative approach already emerges from her essay titles: 'Intertextuality as symbiotic coexistence: Two namesakes and a well-read angel' (1998), 'Taking a line for a walk--poetic contour drawings and contoured poems.' In her T.T. Cloete Memorial Lecture (2009b, 2009c) she demonstrated how acute theoretical insights into iconicity can illuminate Cloete's poetry, enthralling her audience at the same time. For this lecture she also devised a creative title, "The transparent chalice: On form and content in poetry.' As supervisor and promoter of 22 MA and 12 PhD students as well as external examiner of numerous dissertations and theses Heilna has made, and continues to make a huge contribution. Specific recently completed studies include Jean Lombard's study of water snake stories in Afrikaans, M. Taljard's study of Krog's Kleur kom nooit alleen nie (Colour never comes on its own), and A.P. Roux's study of Memorandum: 'n verhaal met skilderye (Memorandum: A narrative with paintings). In the Research Unit: Languages and Literature in the South African context she plays a leading and inspiring role. Internationally Heilna du Plooy also made a significant contribution to the study of Afrikaans literature. In addition to her active participation in national congresses she presented more than 30 papers at international conferences and also gave a series of guest lectures abroad, among others at the Afrikaans Seminary in Diepenbeeck and the programme for Afrikaans at the University of Antwerp. …

This article is an aitempt to outline the difference between Breytenbach's poetic m ethod and tha... more This article is an aitempt to outline the difference between Breytenbach's poetic m ethod and that o f the Symbolists. Although it touches on aspects o f the symbolist poetic m ethod like the rich suggestiveness, the creation o f a m eaningful alternative world (and the effort o f doing this), it focuses m ainly on Breytenbach's use o f metaphor to create an impossible alternative world in a poem, only to relativize and destroy it again in the end. This process is illustrated in an analysis o f poem 8.1 from Lotus. This analysis also shows up five well-known cardinal traits o f Breytenbach's poetry, viz. its carnality, the universal analogy between body, cosmos and poetry and the great emphasis on journeys, discoveries and transform ations by m eans o f language. It is also claim ed that the Z en-B uddhisi Void plays an analogous role in Breytenbach's poetry to the theory o f correspondances in the Symbolists: it is a rich source o f m etaphor. Breytenbach's poetry shows a strong duality between the present world and a m e a n in ^l altemative sphere. Being in and o f this alternative sphere only aggravates the p o e t's isolation (a typically symbolist trait), m aking him literally and figuratively an exile, as exile poem s like "tot siens, kaapstad" (see you again, cape town) and "Walvis in die berg" (Whale on the mountain) and, o f course, his prison poetry, clearly show.

This article is an aitempt to outline the difference between Breytenbach's poetic m ethod and tha... more This article is an aitempt to outline the difference between Breytenbach's poetic m ethod and that o f the Symbolists. Although it touches on aspects o f the symbolist poetic m ethod like the rich suggestiveness, the creation o f a m eaningful alternative world (and the effort o f doing this), it focuses m ainly on Breytenbach's use o f metaphor to create an impossible alternative world in a poem, only to relativize and destroy it again in the end. This process is illustrated in an analysis o f poem 8.1 from Lotus. This analysis also shows up five well-known cardinal traits o f Breytenbach's poetry, viz. its carnality, the universal analogy between body, cosmos and poetry and the great emphasis on journeys, discoveries and transform ations by m eans o f language. It is also claim ed that the Z en-B uddhisi Void plays an analogous role in Breytenbach's poetry to the theory o f correspondances in the Symbolists: it is a rich source o f m etaphor. Breytenbach's poetry shows a strong duality between the present world and a m e a n in ^l altemative sphere. Being in and o f this alternative sphere only aggravates the p o e t's isolation (a typically symbolist trait), m aking him literally and figuratively an exile, as exile poem s like "tot siens, kaapstad" (see you again, cape town) and "Walvis in die berg" (Whale on the mountain) and, o f course, his prison poetry, clearly show.
