The city's safai karmacharis (conservancy/sanitation workers) work in the very dump that everyone chooses to walk away from. The present study seeks to explore the stories of resilience among Mumbai's male sanitation workers. Participants (n = 10) from three wards were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The interview guide was developed using narrative inquiry and the map of narrative conversations in order to bring forward the participant's perception of their work and the resilience they have developed in these adverse conditions. Each individual's story is presented and explored by seeking commonalities in their experiences. Commonalities were found in terms of a positive self-concept consolidated by pride in their work, advocacy and social support. Their narratives were those of a survivor who recognises the injustice but is dealing with the odds instead of giving in. The picture of BMC sanitation workers is no way a rose without thorns and it would be prudent to note that the study could not include female sanitation workers, and addicts who form a substantial portion of the workforce-limitations that future research in the area can address. Insights from this study may be useful in creating a change in citizens' perception towards sanitation work and the workers themselves as a resilient community with the ability to achieve positive outcomes in the face of everyday stigmatisation and hazardous working conditions.

Studies about social responsibility norm and the Empathy Joy hypothesis provisionally prove their role in enhancing prosocial behavior. We studied the difference in online donating behavior as a function of the motive through a field experiment. We circulated three kinds of messages on social media: 1- appealing to egoistic motive 2- appealing to social responsibility 3- information only appeal (control) to evaluate their comparative effect on donating. The data suggests that underlying motivation had no influence on the choice of donation or the amount donated. The paper provides suggestions for organizers of fundraising campaigns based on past research findings and results of the current study.
