The phenomenon has been for the first time physically explained and mathematically solved by Westargaard with the added mass concept. During recent decades, various BEM-FEM and FEM-FEM techniques have been developed to account for the significant parameters which influence the accuracy of the calculated hydrodynamic effects. A BEM-FEM solution is presented based on the use of the matrix of hydrodynamic influence to effectively analyze extensive domains of complex fluid-dam-foundation rock systems. The simulations were conducted with the ADAD-IZIIS software for static and dynamic analysis and design of dams. Validation was conducted by comparing the results with those obtained with the commercially available Adina software. The validation examples showed effective computation time and accurate and stable solution.

The non-linear analysis gives us the possibility to define, i.e., detect zones in which excessive tensile stresses and occurrence of cracks are expected. Definition of effective stresses and effective stiffness characteristics is necessary. For that purpose, a computer programme has been elaborated to analyse the filtration flows through 3D porous coherent material media under the conditions of a stationary filtration regime, as a most common phase of dam serviceability. In the contact zone foundation-dam contact elements of linear type are placed. A threedimensional discrete mathematical model created by substructures and discrete network of isoparametric finite elements with 8 and 6 nodal points is used. A computer programme for automatic generation of 3D geometry of the dam body has been elaborated bas...

Research paper thumbnail of A 3D nonlinear dynamic analysis of a rock-fill dam based on IZIIS software

This paper treats the 3D nonlinear dynamic behavior of a rock-fill dam based on the Mohr-Coulomb ... more This paper treats the 3D nonlinear dynamic behavior of a rock-fill dam based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The dam is situated in a steep, narrow, “V-shaped” rigid canyon. The concept of a massless rock foundation is treated, for which a certain part of the rock is included in the model. The dam-rock interface was modeled by contact elements, which allowed certain relative displacements between the two media of different stiffnesses. The generation of the 3D mathematical model was related to the topology of the terrain, and the nonlinear dynamic response was based on the "step-by-step" linear-acceleration direct-integration method, making use of the Wilson-θ method. The convergence process was in accordance with the Newton-Raphson method. First, the initial static effective stresses existing in the conditions of the established stationary filtration through the clayey core were defined. The analysis was based on an original FE program for the static and dynamic an...

Particular attention was paid to field acquisition parameters, such as the offset of the seismic array, the receiver spacing and the length of the record, needed for the construction of better quality effective dispersion curves. The acquisition field parameters used during the 2D MASW surveys were varied one-by-one in order to determine their respective influence on the dispersion curve quality. In the analyses, the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves, which usually contains most of the dispersion energy, was combined with the higher Rayleigh wave modes. The dispersion images, extracted dispersion curves and the 2D Vs models resulting from the performed surveys at 3 locations are presented in this paper. Conventional seismic refraction and reflection surveys were carried out to validate the interpretations. Data colle...

At the Laboratory of the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology in Skopje, comparative full-scale shaking-table tests of cross-laminated timber panel systems have been carried out as a part of the full research program on the seismic behavior of these types of wooden systems, realized by Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology, Skopje, and the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering (UL FCG), University of Ljubljana. Two different specimens built of cross-laminated timber panels have been tested: specimen containing a pair of single-unit principal wall elements (Specimen 1) and specimen containing a pair of two-unit principal wall elements (Specimen 2). In this article, the results from the shaking-table tests obtained for Specimen 2 and numerically verified by using appro...

Research paper thumbnail of Influence of irregular canyon shape on location of truncation surface

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements, 2013

The complex topography of the terrain in general requires sufficiently large extent of reservoir to be included in the model, which is undoubtedly feasible if BEM technique is used. This paper shows that the irregular canyon shape dictates “the most adequate” location of the truncation surface that gives the smallest negative impact on calculation accuracy. The derived conclusions are based on various 3D analyses of a rigid dam–reservoir system with different shapes and lengths of the fluid domain, where the fluid is treated as incompressible and inviscid. The presented work contributes towards disclosure of the topographic site effects and towards promotion of simple and effective procedure for generation of BE mesh, which is quite accurate in following the topology of the terrain.

The joint vibration of the dam and canyon walls generates pressure and dilatational waves as functions of several variables. Besides the geometry and mechanical properties of the dam-reservoir system, the distance to the non-reflecting truncation boundary is important parameter to be considered in the computation of the hydrodynamic forces. The direction of the seismic excitation should also be taken into account. Different modelling scenarios of arch dam-fluidreservoir systems were conducted and compared via a time dependent indicator referred to as ‘cumulative hydrodynamic energy’. The comparison indicates that, depending on the direction of excitation, the combined vibration of the dam and reservoir with complex topography could generate between 10% and 100% higher hydrodynamic energy at the dam-fluid interface than that generated by a dam-regular res...
