The analysis of pollution control involves a permanent comparison between pollution costs and the costs associated with various methods of pollution reduction. An environmental policy based on economic instruments is more effective than an environmental policy focused on command and control tools. In this respect, the present paper provides a case study showing how anthropogenic factors such as wastewater, industrial, agricultural, and natural factors are able to change the physical and chemical parameters of groundwater in the study area, thus endangering their quality. In order to monitor the groundwater quality in the region of Dobrudja, an analysis of physico-chemical parameters was performed. The content of heavy metals was analyzed and the health risk index was taken into accoun...

A fluoride ion selective electrode was used to determinate the fluoride content in tea samples (Hypericum perforatum, Tilia cordata and Camellia sinensis). Total fluoride contents of tea leaves were determined to be 91.1-162 mg/kg d.w., and 0.095-1.450 mg/L in tea infusions and the percentage of fluoride infused for analysed tea leaves ranged from 7.2% to 89.5%. The study shows that there are differences between the fluoride percentage in the tea infusions and about 85% of fluoride in tea leaves was released into Hypericum perforatum and Camellia sinensis, after 30 min of brewing. Tilia cordata shows a slow growth during the infusion process, having the lowest percentage of fluoride.

The aim of this study was to analyze quantitatively the distribution of heavy metals and ascorbic acid in Allium plants: Allium sativum L. (garlic) and Allium cepa L. (onion). Heavy metals accumulation in garlic and onion was quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) after the chemical mineralization of the samples with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide in a Digesthal device. To determinate of vitamin C we used a titrimetric method with potassium brommat-bromide solution in acid medium, when vitamin C is oxidized to dehidroascorbic acid by bromine. Our results indicate a high concentration of vitamin C in leaves of the studied Allium plants.

In order to estimate the pollution level and the danger created by this phenomenon, some analyses are required with regard to determining the concentration of the pollutant metals in plants samples. The investigated metals were determined by flame atomic absorbtion spectrometry in different types of vegetables and fruits, after the chemical mineralization of the sample with a Digesdahl device. These levels were compared with those from literature.

The present work provides data regarding levels of organochlorine pesticides (lindane, p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, HCB, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin and hepthaclor) and PAHs: acenaphthene (Ace), acenaphthylene (Acy), fluorene (F), naphthalene (Np), anthracene (An), fluoranthene (Fl), phenanthrene (Ph), benzo[α]anthracene (B[α]An), benzo[k]fluoranthene (B[k]Fl), chrysene (Chry), pyrene (Py), benzo[ghi]perylene (B[ghi]Pe), benzo[α]pyrene (B[α]Py), dibenzo[α,h]anthracene dB[α,h]An, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (I[1,2,3-cd]Py) in tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) in different stages of growing. Samples of tomatoes were collected from rural (Slava Rusa) and urban (Constanta) areas from Romania, belonging to Dobrogea region. A Hewlett-Packard 5890 gas chromatograph (GC) equipped with an electron capture detector (ECD) and a HP-5 fused-silica capillary column was used for OCPs analysis, while for PAHs analysis, a Hewlett-Packard 5890 gas chromatograph (GC) equipped with a Hewlett-Packard 5972 mass spectrometer (MS) was used. DDD, DDE and DDT concentrations were under detection limits and all OCPs concentrations recorded for studied samples were under the maximum limits imposed by European Commission. A very wide range of PAH concentration was observed in studied samples. In tomato fruit from urban area the highest concentration was found for antracen (0.671 µg/kg). Benzo[α]pyrene concentration is a good marker of carcinogenic PAH levels in environmental samples and the maximum limit established by the Council Directive was 0.03 µg/kg for foodstuffs. Some levels of BaP for studied samples were over the maximum limit.

The blue hyacinth is a bulbous perennial herb in the Lilliaceae family, grown for its showy and fragrant springtime flower display. Garden chrysanthemums are tender perennials in the Asteraceae family in double-flowered forms. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was used for the quantitative determination of metals in this matrix. Also, the refraction indexes and conductivity were measured using Abbe refractometer and LF 340-A conductometer, for the characterization of the obtained mixtures, respectively for correlation with the mineral content. It was observed that that iron concentrations are higher in blue hyacinth extract and macerates than chrysanthemum.

Aldrin, cis-chlordane, trans-chlordane, oxy-chlordane, 2,4-DDE, and 4,4-DDE were found in all honey samples. The mean value was 0.0540 μg g −1 for oxy-chlordane. In the 55 samples of 109, levels of organochlorine pesticide residues of oxy-chlordane were determined as higher than those of Turkish Alimentarius Codex maximum residual limits (MRLs). Other organochlorine pesticide residues also exceeded MRLs except for cis-heptachlor epoxide and α-hexachlorocyclohexane. The selected analytes were investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) and gas chromatography with thermionic sensitive detection (GC-TSD). The estimated limits of detection for most target analytes were in the μg/kg level (range 0·001-0·320 µg/kg). The purpose of the study was to determine the selected analytes, to assess the exposure of babies and infants and to produce data for comparison with tolerable limits according to the European Union Regulations. In most of the samples the organochlorine pesticides values were under the limit of detection. Exceptions were heptachlor epoxide and endosulfan sulphate, the last of which was found in all analysed samples at low concentrations. We also found detectable levels of ethoprophos, parathion-methyl, chlorpyrifos, prothiofos, guthion, disulfoton and fenchlorphos in most of the analysed samples. Benzo[a]pyrene, which is used as an indicator for the presence of PAHs, was not detected in selected samples. The low level of exposure to contaminants indicates that there are no health risks for the infants and babies that consume this brand of milk powder formulae.
