Cataract density is highly important factor when choosing a surgical method and setting the parameters of a phacoemulsification device. Diagnostic devices enable automated assessment of lens opacification degree. Material and Methods. Study included 30 patients operated on for senile cataracts at the Clinic of Eye Diseases of the University Clinical Center of Vojvodina. After determining the preoperative best corrected visual acuity, cataract density was assessed using the Pentacam Nucleus Staging scale of the Scheimpflug imaging system, Pentacam AXL Wave (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany). The evaluation of the applied ultrasound energy during phacoemulsification was quantified and expressed in the form of Cumulative Dissipated Energy index of the Centurion Vision System (Alcon, Irvine, USA) eye microsurgery device. The obtained results are expressed in the form of mean values, and their connection is presented in the form of correlation. Results. Statistically significant positive correlation was found between the cataract density expressed with use of the Pentacam Nucleus Staging scale and the applied ultrasound energy during surgery, expressed in the form of Cumulative Dissipated Energy index (r=0.37, p=0.04). No statistically significant correlation was found between preoperative best corrected visual acuity and cataract density expressed with the Pentacam Nucleus Staging scale (p>0.05) or between preoperative best corrected visual acuity and Cumulative Dissipated Energy index (p>0.05). Conclusion. The obtained data indicate a positive correlation (r=0.37, p=0.04) between the degree of lens opacification assessed by Pentacam Nucleus Staging scale and the required ultrasound energy applied during phacoemulsification expressed as Cumulative Dissipated Energy index.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the IOP lowering efficacy of both cyclocryotherapy (CCT) and transscleral diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (TS-DCPC) in the management of refractory primary open-angle glaucoma. This prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial included 40 patients (40 eyes) with refractory glaucoma treated at the Eye Department, Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia, between January 2016 and June 2019. Twenty patients underwent CCT (group 1), while another twenty patients were treated with TS-DCPC (group 2). Each patient underwent complete eye examination on the treatment day, as well as follow-up eye examinations 7 days and 1, 6 and 12 months after the intervention, when IOP and number of anti-glaucoma drugs used were recorded. The median baseline IOP was 36.50 mm Hg (IQR, 28.75-42.00) in group 1 and 27.00 mm Hg (IQR, 22.00-35.00) in group 2. Follow-up measurements of IOP in group 1 showed the following results: 16.50 mm Hg (IQR, 7.75-20.00) (60% decrease from the baseline value), 12.00 mm Hg (IQR, 9.25-18.00) (67% decrease from the baseline value), 9.00 mm Hg (IQR, 2.00-13.75) (73% decrease from the baseline value), and 9.50 (IQR, 2.50-12.00) (75% decrease from the baseline value) after 7 days, 1, 6 and 12 months, respectively. Follow-up measurements of IOP in group 2 showed the following results: 16.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-17.00) (48% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-16.00) (56% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 12.25-16.50) (43% decrease from the baseline value) and 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 11.25-15.75) (53% decrease from the baseline value) after 7 days, 1, 6 and 12 months, respectively. The mean number of antiglaucoma drugs used decreased from 4 to 0.65±0.81 and 2.25±1.07 in groups 1 and 2, respectively. In conclusion, study results confirmed the CCT and TS-DCPC to have a rapid and statistically significant ocular hypotensive effect in eyes with refractory glaucoma at one-year follow-up.

Senile cataract is an age-related eye disease and one of the most common causes of visual impairment. It is one of the most important causes of reversible blindness in the elderly persons, with a steady increase in prevalence with advanced age. The resulting loss of visual acuity has important implications for physical functions and the overall quality of life of affected individuals. However, cataract related visual loss is completely reversible with modern cataract surgery techniques. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the visual outcomes (visual acuity and visual function) before and after cataract surgery, and to assess patient satisfaction with final surgical outcomes. Material and Methods. This prospective study included 176 consecutive patients with senile cataract who underwent phacoemulsification with a foldable intraocular lens implantation. Evaluation of vision related problems of daily living was done in all patients using a vision related quality of ...

The association between diabetes and cataract formation has been shown in many clinical studies. Development of cataract occurs more frequently and at an earlier age in diabetic patients. Due to the increasing prevalence of diabetes worldwide, the incidence of diabetic cataracts steadily rises. While the overall outcomes of cataract surgery are excellent, patients with diabetes may have poorer vision outcomes than those without diabetes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the visual outcomes (visual acuity and visual function), intraoperative and postoperative complications of cataract surgery, and to assess the final surgical outcomes. Material and Methods. The prospective study included 128 patients (133 eyes) with cataract and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 2 at least 5 years prior to cataract surgery, operated at the Eye Clinic, Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad. A full medical history included patients? age, the time since the diagnosis of diabe...

The aim of study was to collect information about factors related to glaucoma damage at the time of surgery in Novi Sad, Vojvodina province, Serbia. Methods. Retrospective data collection on filtrating procedures of 38 patients with open-angle glaucoma was performed. The study was done at the University Eye Clinic, Clinical center of Vojvodina, Serbia between July 2011 and December 2014. The following variables were collected from a data collection sheet at last visit for each patient: age, sex, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), visual field indices (MD and PSD), number of active antiglaucoma drugs, glaucoma type, and surgical procedures. Results. The mean age was 66.21 ? 17.92 years. Among patients, 57% were female and 43% were male. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) was found in 60% (23/38), pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (XFG) in 37% (14/38) of patients. The median number of active antiglaucoma drugs was 2.73, ranging 1?4. More than 90% of patients were on...

Preterm birth and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) could affect optical and biometric features of eyes and cause refractive errors. The aim of this study was to compare the ocular axial length, anterior chamber depth and lens thickness changes during the first year in preterm born babies with and without ROP. Methods. This prospective longitudinal study included 87 preterm born babies. The examinations were performed at 3 and 12 months after birth and included fundus examination and measurements of the ocular axial length, anterior chamber depth and lens thickness. Based on the results of fundus examination at 3 months, the subjects were divided into two groups and the measurements of those with and without ROP were compared. Results. At 3 months 60.92% of infants had ROP. The mean values in the ROP group were: axial length 16.56 mm and 16.53 mm, chamber depth 2.34 mm and 2.38 mm and lens thickness 4.04 mm and 3.96 mm, in the right and the left eye, respectively. Vitamin C is the most effective reducing hydrosoluble antioxidant causing reduction in the levels of free radicals in crystaline lens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the age-related change of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) level in the aqueous humor of patients with senile cataract. Methods. This prospective study included 74 patients, divided into 3 age groups, with age-related cataract, underwent routine phaco cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation. Aqueous humor was aspirated from 74 eyes at the beginning of phacoemulsification. The levels of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) in aqueous humor were determined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results. The average age of patients included in the study was 65 ? 9.85 years (54-87 years). The level of vitamin C in aqueous humor was 152.78 ? 7.0125 ?g/mL in the group A (50-59 years), 134.15 ? 5.1569 ?g/mL in the group B (60-69...
