The best thing would be, of course, to find one's own region ethnographically described in a work entitled either "The Bavarians" or "The Californians." One could then compare the portrait sketched by the ethnographer with one's own self-portrait and thus appreciate the extent to which it actually succeeds in representing the research object "frgm the native's point of view." Nothing but empty theory, the impatient reader might object here;the Bavarians or Californians have, so far, not been made an object of a serious ethnographic representation. However, in order to avoid having to abandon a discussion of the question raised at the beginning,I will, in the following analysis, substitute a none-toodistant and comparatively well-investigated populati...

These ritual practices include forms of pilgrimage that encourage the performance of a sexual act on the tombs of saints, which is regarded as conducive to the redemption of the wishes and hopes associated with such a pilgrimage. The possible sexual partners involved in ritual seks (ritual sex) include not only husband and wife, but also other pilgrims to whom one is not married; even prostitutes are regarded as completely legitimate partners. For a number of years, pilgrimage sites known for this remarkable conjunction of religion and sexuality have been experiencing an unprecedented boom, in sharp contrast to the often diagnosed Islamization of Indonesian society. Against this background, this article examines the media discourses that are controversially related to ritual seks a...

For me the strength of the volume rests in its detailed ethnographies of spirituality and ritual action. The several chapters emerged from a "scientific network" of early career researchers focusing on the theme of "Religious Dynamics in Southeast Asia." It was supported initially by the German Research Foundation over a period of four years, and then from 2011 the project was continued, expanded, and translated into a "competence network" financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The book gives expression to the scholarly work undertaken by primarily German-based researchers from the universities of Frankfurt am Main (Birgit Bräuchler, Volker Gottowik),
