The authenticity of some toromiro trees has been questioned because the similarities among hybrid lines leads to misclassification of the species. The conservation program of toromiro has the objective of its reinsertion into Rapa Nui, but it requires the exact genotyping and certification of the selected plants in order to efficiently reintroduce the species. In this study, we present for the first time the complete chloroplast genome of S. toromiro and four other Sophora specimens, which were sequenced de-novo and assembled after mapping the raw reads to a chloroplast database. The length of the chloroplast genomes ranges from 154,239 to 154,473 bp. A total of 130–143 simple sequence repeats (SSR) loci and 577 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified.

However, the number of honey bees has fallen significantly since 2006, becoming a huge ecological problem nowadays. The principal cause is CCD, or Colony Collapse Disorder, characterized by the seemingly spontaneous abandonment of hives by their workers. One of the characteristics of CCD in honey bees is the alteration of the bacterial communities in their gastrointestinal tract, mainly due to the decrease ofFirmicutespopulations, such as theLactobacilli. At this time, the causes of these alterations remain unknown. We recently isolated a strain ofLactobacillus kunkeei(L. kunkeeistrain MP2) from the gut of Chilean honey bees.L. kunkeei, is one of the most commonly isolated bacterium from the honey bee gut and is highly versatile in different ecological niches. In this study, we aimed to elucidate in detail, theL. kunkeeigenetic background and perform a comparative genome analysis wit...

Both cause a self-limiting diarrhea in immunocompetent individuals, but cause potentially life-threatening disease in the immunocompromised. Despite the importance of these pathogens, only one reference genome of each has been analyzed and published. These two reference genomes were sequenced using automated capillary sequencing; as of yet, no next generation sequencing technology has been applied to improve their assemblies and annotations. For C. hominis, the main challenge that prevents a larger number of genomes to be sequenced is its resistance to axenic culture. In the present study, we employed next generation technology to analyse the genomic DNA and RNA to generate a new reference genome sequence of a C. hominis strain isolated directly from human stool and a new genome annotation of the C. parvum Iowa reference genome.

It has an immense antioxidant capacity conferred by its unusually high concentrations of anthocyanins and glycosylated forms of delphinidins. Our group collected several types of Maqui from different regions of southern Chile to create a “Maqui Germplasm Collection”. Interestingly, one of our individuals showed the peculiar phenotype of a white fruit. This “white maqui” (WM) contains very low levels of anthocyanins in the mature stage (2.9 mg total anthocyanins/100g dry fruit). On the contrary, we also identified another extreme individual, M152, with an intense dark blue color and the highest levels of anthocyanins reported in the country (967.3 mg total anthocyanins/100g dry fruit). Our group has used these radical germplasms for gene discovery and elucidation of the regulatory mechanisms that control the anthoc...

We propose to name the endogenous sequence as Aristotelia chilensis Virus 1 (AcV1). High-throughput sequencing of the genome of this tree uncovered an endogenous viral element, with a size of 7122 bp, corresponding to the complete genome of AcV1. Its sequence contains three open reading frames (ORFs): ORFs 1 and 2 shares 66%-73% amino acid similarity with members of the Caulimoviridae virus family, especially the Petunia vein clearing virus (PVCV), Petuvirus genus. ORF1 encodes a movement protein (MP); ORF2 a Reverse Transcriptase (RT) and a Ribonuclease H (RNase H) domain; and ORF3 showed no amino acid sequence similarity with any other known virus proteins. Analogous to other known endogenous pararetrovirus sequences (EPRVs), AcV1 is integrated in the genome of Maqui Berry and showed low viral transcriptional activity, which ...

This virulent strain was isolated in 2008 from Oncorhynchus mykiss farms, and multiple genes involved in pathogenicity, environmental adaptation, and metabolic pathways were identified.
