Optical homogeneity and that of chemical composition are investigated. It is shown that possible variations of composition in a crystal's volume are below 1%. Thermal E and optical Eg° widths of the forbidden zone are determined in the absorption spectra.[Russian Text Ignored].

The criterion for phase locking is determined and optimal relations between the energy parameters of waves upon four-wave mixing are found. Two-channel parallel laser systems based on self-phase-conjugation loop oscillators are studied and the possibility of their phase locking with the phasing degree up to 0.9 is shown.

Based on the measured kinetics the radiative and multiphonon relaxation rates of the 4G7/2 manifold were determined. The lead fluoride crystals

Sodium doping has been shown to have an advantageous effect on the optical and lasing properties of lead thiogallate crystals. At a pump pulse duration of 1.5 ms, output pulse energies up to 15 mJ have been obtained at a slope efficiency of up to 4%. Cascade lasing on two Dy{sup 3+} transitions, at 4.3, 4.5, 4.65, 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 m, has been demonstrated. (lasers)

The results indicate that the ceramic possesses high optical quality and a small absorption coefficient (~10-3 cm-1 at a wavelength of 1.07 mum) and is suitable as a material for optical components. Experimental evidence is presented for spatial modulation of the thermally induced depolarisation

The absorption coefécients of the single crystal and ceramics are estimated as a`4X5Â 10 À4 cm À1 and a`1X33 Â 10 À3 cm À1 , respectively.

Results on spontaneous Raman spectroscopy of alkaline-earth tungstate crystals are presented. The... more Results on spontaneous Raman spectroscopy of alkaline-earth tungstate crystals are presented. The frequency of the modes active in stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) modes was found to increase and their width to decrease with increasing cation radius and mass in the series of alkaline-earth (Ca, Sr, Ba) tungstates. High peak values of the Raman scattering cross section for barium and strontium tungstate crystals ö new media offering promise for SRS ö were predicted and observed in the experiments. Laser experiments on the SRS threshold showed that the SRS gain for the barium tungstate crystal was close to the record value observed for the barium nitrate crystal, which is extensively used in SRS. The oscillation dynamics of a three-channel holographic Nd:YAG laser system is simulated by considering the phase-locking conditions depending on the relative gain mismatch in laser channels. The conditions of lasing with the gain-selected control laser channel are found under which controlled channels are phase-locked even in the case of the threefold difference in their gains. Different regimes of laser operation and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) for a laser diode (LD)... more Different regimes of laser operation and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) for a laser diode (LD)-pumped PbMoO4:Nd3+ crystal have been investigated. Under 1.5 W LD pumping, the output power of the PbMoO4:Nd3+ laser in the free-running mode at 1056 nm reached 0.65 W with a slope efficiency of up to 53%. Using different LiF: F-2 saturable absorbers, we achieved a maximum pulse energy of 11 microJ at a 1.4 ns pulse duration and a maximum output power of 0.35 W (10 microJ) at a 7 ns pulse width in the passively Q-switched mode. PbMoO4:Nd3+ self-Raman-laser operation at 1163 nm (first Stokes) was obtained for the first time, to our knowledge. The self-Raman-laser output pulse energy was measured to be as high as 6 microJ and the pulse duration was estimated to be shorter than 500 ps.

The evolution of the pulse parameters along the train is investigated. Direct time-resolved measurements allow us to determine the positive linear chirp of the laser frequency, which causes the pulse spectral broadening of Av = 50-60 cm-'. The chirped pulses are compressed in the external grating compressor. The measured pulse duration of 2 ps is limited by the time resolution of the streak camera.

The use of LiF:F−2 crystal as a saturable absorber has provided effective Q-switching of the Nd:GdVO4 laser with high pulse energy. The laser pulse duration at the 1st Stokes wavelength 1174 nm was as short as 500 ps. Diode-to-Raman optical conversion efficiency more than 2 % at the pulse peak power of 9 kW was achieved.
