We will present a summary of new results from NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory`s Tall Tower ... more We will present a summary of new results from NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory`s Tall Tower greenhouse gas monitoring network. The tower network is operated by the Global Monitoring Division, which also maintains the global Cooperative Air Sampling network and a network of aircraft profiling sites over North America. Tall tower CO2 mixing ratio measurements are sensitive to upwind fluxes over scales of hundreds of kilometers, and the primary objective of the tower network is to obtain regionally representative carbon flux estimates for the North American continent. Mixing ratios of CO2 and CO are measured semi-continuously at the towers, and the KWKT-TV tower site near Moody, TX has recently also been equipped with sensors to measure radon and O3. Daily flask samples are collected at the KWKT tower and analyzed for CO2, CO, CH4, SF6, N2O, H2, stable isotopes of CO2 and CH4, COS, and a variety of halocarbon and hydrocarbon species. Daily flask sampling will be implemented at all...

We simulated meteorology and atmospheric CO 2 transport over the Netherlands with the mesoscale m... more We simulated meteorology and atmospheric CO 2 transport over the Netherlands with the mesoscale model RAMS-Leaf3 coupled to the biospheric CO 2 flux model 5PM. The results were compared with meteorological and CO 2 observations, with particular attention to the tall tower of Cabauw. An analysis of the coupled exchange of energy, moisture and CO 2 showed that the surface fluxes in the domain strongly influenced the atmospheric properties. The majority of the variability in the afternoon CO 2 mixing ratio in the middle of the domain was determined by biospheric and fossil fuel CO 2 fluxes in the limited area domain (640×640 km). Variation of the surface CO 2 fluxes, reflecting the uncertainty of the parameters in the CO 2 flux model 5PM, resulted in a range of simulated atmospheric CO 2 mixing ratios of about 12 ppm in the well-mixed boundary layer. Additionally, we identified an uncertainty in the surface energy fluxes. The spread caused by this uncertainty in the simulated atmospheric vertical mixing caused a CO 2 transport error of 1.7 ppm. This is an important source of uncertainty and should be accounted for to avoid biased estimates of the CO 2 mixing ratio, but does not overwhelm the signal in the CO 2 mixing ratio due to the spread in CO 2 surface fluxes.

The greatest challenge to human health of recent times is the pandemic caused by the retroviruses... more The greatest challenge to human health of recent times is the pandemic caused by the retroviruses known as HIV1 and HIV2. These have unleashed a plethora of opportunistic infections with organisms ranging from other viruses to helminths, some of which are newly recognised taxa or organisms never before identified as serious pathogens of man. Animal and bird migration as well as human travel and international trade have extended, to an alarming degree, the dissemination of other viral infections. Malaria is an increasing global challenge to human health, a reversal of the downward trend that was achieved in the latter half of the 20th century. Moreover, evidence is currently accumulating for the existence of a fifth species of Plasmodium in man. In the bacterial and protozoal fields, other novel organisms are being described. Powerful new tools of molecular biology are being deployed to probe parasite genetics, for example to reveal the genome of Plasmodium falciparum. These and mole...

Although preliminary clinical trials with CYP failed to confirm such activity in subjects with naturally acquired infection with Plasmodium falciparum, Nigerian investigators have reported that another antihistaminic, chlorpheniramine, significantly restores the blood schizontocidal action of CQ in semi-immune patients with CQ-resistant P. falciparum, when the two compounds are administered together. The rates at which resistance to CYP can be produced, in mice infected either with CQ-resistant P. yoelii ssp. NS or CQ-resistant P. yoelii nigeriensis, when drug-selection pressure is exerted with this compound alone have now been compared with the rate and extent to which resistance develops in infected animals that are trea...

In this paper, the authors review the literature on PCA in burn patients and present two cases. Flaws in most published studies make it difficult to determine the efficacy of PCA in burn patients. Both the literature and experience indicate that many patients with acute burns are not suitable candidates for PCA. The cases illustrate the different methods patients may use to achieve adequate analgesia with PCA. Both patients and nurses face a steep learning curve in using PCA for management of procedural pain in burn care.

NS, but not when given to mice infected with the CQ-sensitive P. berghei N strain. The reason why this potentiation may be of particular value in the treatment of severe falciparum malaria is discussed. Mefloquine and halofantrine displayed a similar level of potentiation with Fenozan B07 against the CQ-resistant parasites. However, antagonism was shown by combinations of Fenozan B07 with pyronaridine or the 8-aminoquinoline WR 238 605 when used against CQ-resistant parasites. Mefloquine with Fenozan B07 is also antagonistic against a highly mefloquine-resistant line of P. yoelii ssp. NS. The reasons behind such antagonism are not known. The importance is stressed of using carefully selected...

It also exerts some action against pre-erythrocytic schizogony, is a potent gametocytocide, and exerts a direct sporontocidal effect in infected mosquitoes. In the '4-day test' the ED90s are 6.8 and 6.0 mg/kg/day for four consecutive days by the subcutaneous and oral routes respectively against drug-sensitive Plasmodium berghei N, and 6.3 and 25 mg/kg against chloroquine-resistant P. yoelii NS in vivo. By the oral route against P. berghei N infection in mice, Fenozan-50F is about half as active as arteether but nearly three times as active as sodium artesunate. The activity of Fenozan-50F is retained against a wide spectrum of drug-resistant parasite lines, although those highly resistant to quinine or to artemisinin are less responsive at the ED90 level. At the ultrastructural level the co...
