Included are four previously described species (P. brunneifrons (Mei- jere), P. canora Cresson, P. duplosetosa (Becker), and P. pollinosa Miyagi). The tribe Discocerinini is characterized and a key to Asian discocerinine genera is provided; the monophyly of Polytrichophora is established, and a key to species occurring in the Palearctic and Oriental regions is presented, including P. orbitalis (Loew), which was reported to occur in north Africa (we have not seen specimens of this species from the Old World, however, and doubt its occurrence there). Polytrichophora luteicornis Cresson is determined to be a junior synonym of P. canora Cresson. All Asian species treated are redescribed, and characters of the male genitalia are illustrated.

The monophyly of the genus is confirmed, as is the genus' sister-group relationship to Sepedomerus Steyskal, 1973. The cladistic analysis was done using NONA and a matrix of 27 adult morphological characters, including structures of the male and female terminalia. The relationships in parenthetic notation are: (S. guatemalana (S. veredae (S. lindneri (S. isthmi (S. lagoa ((S. barbosai+ S. canabravana) ((S. neffi (S. giovana+S. guianica))(S. telson (S. incipiens+S. trichotypa))))))))).

Paraephydra is revised and includes P. freitasi (Oliveira), comb. nov. and P. stauros, sp. nov. For the genus Neoephydra, N. araucaria, sp. nov., is described and new combinations are made for most Neotropical species previously placed in Dimecoenia. The tribe Ephydrini is characterized and a key to the genera of this tribe is presented.

Aedes fryeri (Theobald) is removed from the subgenus Levua Stone and Bohart (genus Levua of ) and placed in the new monotypic subgenus Coetzeemyia as its type species by present designation. Recognition of Coetzeemyia is based in part on a cladistic analysis of 16 species: seven outgroup species (four non-Aedini species and 3 aedine species) and nine within group species, including the three species that had been included in Levua and six other species belonging to three related subgenera in Aedes (Geoskusea Edwards, Rhinoskusea Edwards, and Ochlerotatus Lynch Arribalzaga). The type female and the male genitalia of Ae. fryeri are redescribed and illustrated. Its affinity to other subgenera of the genus Aedes is discussed. Information on the type data, distribution, bionomics, medical importance, and taxonomy of this species are presented. Some morphological characteristics of adults of the subgenera Ochlerotatus and Levua of Aedes are tabulated. Based on this cladistic analysis, it is evident that Levua is a monotypic lineage represented by a single known species, Ae. geoskusea. Aedes dufouri is transferred back to the subgenus Ochlerotatus and is distinguished from other congeners of this subgenus.

Of the nine genera, Setacera Cresson, Cirrula Cresson, Dimecoenia Cresson, Paracoenia Cresson and Ephydra Fallen are mostly temperate in distribution, primarily in the Northern Hemisphere. The other four genera, which are exclusively Neotropical, include two, Austrocoenia and Notiocoenia, that were treated previously in the tribe Scatellini, and two recently described genera: Paraephydra (type species: Paraephydra freitasi (Oliveira)) and Neoephydra (type species: Neoephydra araucaria Mathis). New species described herein are: Neoephydra neotropica (Chile), N. dasycephala (Argentina and Peru), N. mallonota (Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile), N. shewelli (Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile), N. inca (Argentina, Bolivia, Peru), N. penai (Chile) and N. trichina (Argentina and Chile). New synonyms are (cited in their original combinations): Ephydra densepilosa Hendel = E. ciligena Rondani, Dimecoenia grumanni Oliveira = E. ciligena Rondani, D. coltaensis Cresson = D. zurcheri Hendel, D. carrerai Oliveira = D. zurcheri Hendel, D. lopesi = E. ciligena Rondani, D. travassosi Mello and Oliveira = E. prionoptera Thomson. A neotype is designated for E. caesia Wulp, and the following lectotype designations have also been made to better stabilize nomenclature (here cited in their original combination): Ephydra chilensis Macquart, Ephydra densepilosa Hendel, Ephydra pravoneura Hendel, Ephydra prionoptera Thomson, and Dimecoenia zurcheri Hendel. Dimecoenia venteli Oliveira is listed as a species inquirenda , as the type series includes only female specimens that we cannot presently recognize. Although the genera and subgenera are fairly easily distinguished, the included species are frequently difficult to separate, and we have generally relied on characters of the male terminalia to determine a species identity. Illustrations of male terminalia and distribution maps are included for each species and keys to all taxa have been provided.
