Scenario one: The federal government has recently adopted a proposal to establish throughout the country a chain of independent freshman writing centers. These centers have no affiliation with any college or university. public or private. They are run with minimal overhead. Located in central urban and suburban locations, they are housed in no-frills workmanlike facilities staffed by former part-time writing instructors. Many of these instructors are Ph.D.s for whom the job market in English does not exist. Each center has two administrators, and, given its federal funding, emphasis is placed on filling positions with minority candidates. Pay is at least equivalent on a prorated basis to that received by full-time English instructors with equivalent service, experience, and qualifications at public and private colleges in the area. In order to assess student interest in the course format, content, achievement, and utilization o... more In order to assess student interest in the course format, content, achievement, and utilization of experiential learning as compared to other sections of the course offered simultaneously where the population was heterogeneous by age, an investigator-made survey was distributed to all evening sections of the course. Final course grades, scores on midterms and final examinations, papers, c3ass participation, and journal grades were analyzed for differences by course sections. The findings revealed no significant difference between heterogeneous and homogeneous-by-age groups. (Author/NB)
