In this study, 5 kg of dried and ready to crack mixed varieties of palm nuts were grouped based on their minor diameter (1) as small size: 1 < 13.00 mm; medium size: 13.00 ≤ 1 < 17.00 mm and large size: 1 ≥ 17.00 mm for each size range, nuts were randomly selected and each range placed into different 100 ml beaker. Toluene was poured into each of the beaker until the nuts at the top were tipped covered. The volume of toluene () used in filling to the tip of the top nuts was quantified as void / space unoccupied by the nuts. The experiment was repeated using 150, 200, 250 and 300 ml beaker respectively. Each experiment was carried out in duplicate and their mean and standard deviation computed. Result showed that voidage of palm nut in a processing vessel was 45 ± 4%. This designates that the actual volume of palm nuts occupied in a processing vessel such as hopper would likely be 55% of its container's volume. Hence, could be used in the design of storage facilities such as silo, bin, etc.

Drying experiments were conducted at the vacuum pressure of 0.6 bar and the drying temperatures of 36 and 46 o C. Five thin layer drying models namely Henderson and Pabis model, Logarithmic model, Two-term model, Modified page equation model and Lewis model to estimate moisture ratio of medical plants were used. Different mathematical drying models were compared according to their root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R 2), and reduced chi-square (). For sweet basil, parsley and dill leaves, the logarithmic model, the two-term model and the Henderson and Pabis model showed better fit to the experimental data compared to other models, respectively.

In this study, cassava starch (substrate) and glucoamylase (enzyme) from rice were sourced and prepared. The time course of the enzyme hydrolysis was studied at pH 5 and temperature of 400C as optimum conditions. The hydrolysis was carried out at various substrate concentrations. The time course of the reaction for glucose production was monitored at 10 minutes interval for a period of one hour. The glucose concentration produced was plotted against reaction time to evaluate the optimum glucose amount and its corresponding substrate concentration. The reaction velocity was then computed. Also, the experimental data were fitted into Michaelis-Menten model using Statistical Package for Social Scientists to compare the yield of glucose. Results showed optimum yield of g...

Research paper thumbnail of Modeling of Water Absorption by Dried Palm Nut Soaked at Room Temperature

International Journal of Trend in Scientific Research and Development, Apr 30, 2019

In cracking palm nuts by application of appropriate impact energy, one of the predominant factors... more In cracking palm nuts by application of appropriate impact energy, one of the predominant factors that would enhance the release of either high percentage of whole or split kernels is the percentage level of moisture content in the nuts. The split kernels encourage rancidity of oil since the oily surface of the kernel is exposed to environmental influence. There is therefore need to study the absorption of water in dried palm nuts as a pointer to condition dried nuts to moisture content range that would enhance the production of whole kernels. In this study, dried Dura and Tenera palm nuts varieties were obtained from a palm oil processing mill, classified based on their minor diameter into three size ranges of small, medium and large sizes. These nuts were further dried to bone dry mass followed by immersion of each size range of nuts into different vessels containing water. The rate of water absorption was monitored at 3-hourly intervals. The data generated were analyzed. The result showed that the rate of water absorption per nut unit area had similar curves pattern as the drying curve established for palm nuts. Models for water absorption process involving the dried palm nut was developed based on basic underlying principles and data generated from experimental runs. The models were then validated; and found to be very useful in describing the water absorption process per nut unit area in a given time; and predicting moisture content of bone dry mass of nut soaked in water and kept at room temperature.

Thus, there is a need to find the efficiency (rotor operating factor) Kf of the rotor and then used it to obtain the actual operating rotor speed in revolution per minute (rpm) for effective operation. In this study, masses of palm nuts (ḿ), its exit velocity from the rotor disc (v), rotor radius (r), axial dimensions, and energy generated due to friction, sound, heat, etc. (Ef), palm nut translational kinetic the energy (KEtrans), energy released per unit nut (Q) and inverse of theoretical rotor speed (Nt-1) were used based on some existing models. Plots of r against Nt-1 to determine the slope and thereafter evaluate Kf were carried out. The effect of ḿ on Kf was assessed using Analysis of Variance at 5% level probability. The results showed that the mean Kf was 0.76 and was not affected by varying ḿ since the calculated probability was 0....

It is included in the Bignoniaceae botanical family, whose multiplication is quite solely carried by seeds. Forest dispersion elements, i.e., the seeds, deserve a deep understanding on their physiological performance. The objective of this research work was to determine the optimum seed moisture content for laser interaction in biospeckle tests, which is based on laser interferometry. Seeds were hydrated to the level of 69% and then divided into four subsamples, i.e., (1) seeds without teguments, (2) seeds with tegument, (3) seeds without teguments frozen at 0 °C and (4) seeds with teguments frozen at 0 °C. The four subsamples were then separated into five moisture level groups (28%, 35%, 54%, 63% and 69%) and exposed to the laser. The biospeckle phenomenon quantification was carried out by means of the moment of inertia (MI) approach. A positive correlation between MI and seed moisture content was obtained. It was also verified that seed moisture content between 28% and 54% showed better interaction with the laser. The results are important for the application of the biospeckle technique as a possible tool to assess the quality of purple ipê seeds.

This study reviews the development of simulation software as a research tool for designing evaporative cooling systems. The simulation incorporates information concerning the effect of the cooling pad length, cooling pad height, cooling pad thickness, air velocity, water flow rate, water temperature, water to air mass flow rate, and number of cooling pad segments in terms of the performance efficiency of the cooling system. The software rapidly produced model data, which was subjected to further analysis for verification and validation during the testing stage. The modelled and experimental data of the saturation efficiency were compared using 4 of the most important statistical parameters, based on a paired sample t-test of an equal variance assumption. The results indicated that there was no significant difference between the software generated data and the experimental data of the Saturation E...

It was observed that increase in size of the drying material increased the drying time. Moreover, the drying rate curve res...

The relationship would aid in the design of a nut cracker for effective cracking of the nuts to release high percentage of whole kernels. In this study, dried palm nuts of Tenera variety having moisture content of 4.84% d.bwere used. These nuts were classified into six size ranges. Each nut in each size range had it mass weighed; minor diameter, intermediate diameter and major diameter measured and recorded before it was subjected to impact. The shell thickness of each nut that cracked and releases whole kernel after impact in a Test rig was also measured and recorded. Result revealed that nut mass ( m

Evaporative cooling occurs when warm and unsaturated air is blown across a wet surface. This stud... more Evaporative cooling occurs when warm and unsaturated air is blown across a wet surface.
