Low-cost and simple (LCS) ergonomics methods were used (suitable for IDCs), e.g., subjective assessment, direct observation, use of archival data and assessment of noise. It was found that workers were facing noise irritation, neck and back pains and headache in the various processes in the CL. LCS ergonomic interventions to rectify the problems included installing noise insulating covers, providing earplugs, installing elevated platforms, slanting visual display terminals and installing extra exhaust fans. The interventions cost less than 3 000 USD but they significantly improved workers' OHS, which directly correlated with an improvement in working conditions and job satisfaction. The findings are useful in solving OHS problems in electronics industries in IDCs as they share similar manufacturing processes, problems and limitations. ergonomics methods ergonomic interventions occupational health and safety (OHS) semiconductor industry industrially developing countries (IDCs)

Research paper thumbnail of MalariaCount: An image analysis-based program for the accurate determination of parasitemia

Journal of Microbiological Methods, 2007

Malaria is a serious global health problem and rapid, precise determination of parasitemia is nec... more Malaria is a serious global health problem and rapid, precise determination of parasitemia is necessary for malaria research and in clinical settings. Manual counting by light microscopy is the most widely used technique for parasitemia determination but it is a time-consuming and laborious process. The aim of our study was to develop an automated image analysis-based system for the rapid and accurate determination of parasitemia. We have developed, for the first time, a software, MalariaCount, that automatically generates parasitemias from images of Giemsastained blood smears. The potential application and robustness of MalariaCount was tested in normal and drug-treated in vitro cultures of Plasmodium falciparum. The results showed a tight correlation between MalariaCount and manual count parasitemia values. These findings suggest that MalariaCount can potentially be used as a tool to provide rapid and accurate determination of parasitemia in research laboratories where frequent, large-scale, efficient determination of parasitemia is required.

Research paper thumbnail of Regulation of interleukin-1  and interleukin-1  inhibitor release by human airway epithelial cells

European Respiratory Journal, 2004

In asthma, human airway epithelial cells (HAECs) regulate the intensity of mucosal inflammation, ... more In asthma, human airway epithelial cells (HAECs) regulate the intensity of mucosal inflammation, in part, by releasing the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1b. However, the IL-1b inhibitors, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) and soluble IL-1 receptor type II (sIL-1RII), regulate IL-1b bioactivity. In order to better understand the control of IL-1b activity in the airway mucosa, the role(s) of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-a, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the release of IL-1b and its inhibitors by cultured HAECs were examined. HAECs were treated with TNF-a (2-200 ng?mL-1), dibutyryl cAMP (0.01-1 mM), 8-bromo-cGMP (0.01-1 mM) or vehicle for 24 h, and cytokine levels in the HAECconditioned medium were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. HAECs produced IL-1b, IL-1RA and sIL-1RII constitutively, but the inhibitor concentrations greatly exceeded that of IL-1b (by y100and y550-fold, respectively). TNF-a dose-dependently increased the levels of all IL-1b cytokine family members. However, over the range of TNF-a concentrations studied, IL-1b concentration increased more than those of its inhibitors. cAMP increased constitutive and TNF-astimulated IL-1b release but reduced that of sIL-1RII. In contrast, cGMP had no effect on IL-1b but reduced IL-1RA and sIL-1RII release. Under basal conditions, the disproportionate release of inhibitors relative to interleukin-1b by human airway epithelial cells probably prevents interleukin-1bmediated biological effects. Tumour necrosis factor-a, cyclic adenosine monophosphate and cyclic guanosine monophosphate may potentiate mucosal inflammation by increasing interleukin-1b levels relative to those of its inhibitors in the airway mucosa.

The sonographic appearances are described as well as a method of ultrasound detection following water ingestion. Tumours were classified into: (i) intraluminal tumours (duodenal adenocarcinoma n = 5; distal ileal lipoma with intussusception, n = 1; (ii) intramural tumours (proximal jejunal adenocarcinoma, n = 2; jejuno-ileal lymphoma, n = 5; (iii) extraluminal tumours (duodenal leiomyosarcoma, n = 2; neurilemmoma, n = 1; jejuno-ileal leiomyoma, n = 4; leiomyosarcoma, n = 6; subserosal lymphangioma, n = 1). Observing the lesion intermittently over a period of 1 h after water ingestion improves the localization of tumours within the small bowel.
