The establishment and functioning of the official multilateral Arms Control and Regional Security (ACRS) Working Group in the multilateral process has had to overcome at best lack of knowledge and at worst deep skepticism on the part of Arab and Israeli officials and onlookers about arms control. In that regard, the parallel process of so-called “track-two†non-official discussions has helped to increase understanding and build support for the concept of a regional arms control and confidence-building component in the overall Middle East Peace Process.

In many cases, leachates from sanitary landfills are recognized as important groundwater pollutants.1?2 Quantitative evalu ation of this pollution potential and data on the kinetics of this process are needed for any decision on the proper design and operation of landfills. Of special importance is the informa tion on the time span during which different pollutants are expected to be leached out of a given landfill. Of special interest in this study are the re actions in sanitary landfills receiving town refuse with high concentrations of putrifiable materials. Compared with about 14% food waste and 55% paper and cardboard in an average town refuse in the U. S.,3 refuse typical in Israel and used in this study con tains about 50% food wastes and only 30% paper, cardboard, and rags. Elsewhere, one finds an even higher percentage of food resi dues and lower paper product contents (70...

One pond of each pair was fertilized with nitrogen and phosphorus; the other was left as an unfertilized control. Algal growth was induced in both fertilized ponds, leading to a significant reduction of turbidity. The sedimentation of the algal-clay clusters removed clay, algae, and nutrients from the water column. The addition of fertilizer seems to be an efficient and economical means to clarify turbid ponds.
