The goal of achieving decarbonized operation of power systems in response to climate change has l... more The goal of achieving decarbonized operation of power systems in response to climate change has led to an increase in the number of sources connected to electrical grids through inverters, of which photovoltaic systems are an example. The operating characteristics of these systems in steady-state or transient operation are different from those of synchronous machines, giving rise to issues related to power system stability. The vast majority of grid codes stipulate that fault ride-through operating requirements should be enabled during severe contingencies in the transmission network, prioritizing delivery of reactive power to the power system to support voltage stability. However, this control action may contribute to rapid collapse of the system voltage under adverse operating conditions, such as when the critical voltage in the power vs. voltage curve is near the reliable voltage operating bound. Supporting power system stability under these circumstances represents a new challenge for inverter control schemes. This paper adapts a recently published fault ride-through control scheme for PV inverters for use in a multimachine power system and shows that the scheme can successfully maintain transient and voltage stability even under adverse voltage operating conditions.

Voltage sags/swells and harmonics are recurring problems in electric energy distribution systems.... more Voltage sags/swells and harmonics are recurring problems in electric energy distribution systems. In order to solve these issues, several dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topologies, such as the conventional three-wire DVR, have been proposed in the literature. Despite its capability of mitigating voltage disturbances, many researchers have established that conventional three-wire DVR cannot compensate for zero sequence voltage disturbances. In this paper, an in-depth study of the conventional three-phase DVR is presented, which shows that this DVR topology can also be used to attenuate zero sequence voltage components without increasing control complexity. The necessary conditions for this to occur are discussed in details and a brief comparison between the conventional three-wire DVR and other DVR topologies that can compensate for zero sequence voltage disturbances is made. Experimental results are included to validate the theoretical study.

The maximum power generated in a PV panel varies according to irradiation and temperature. Since the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic modules is low, it is necessary to implement sophisticated control techniques for monitoring the maximum power point (MPPT). Maximum power point tracking techniques are automatic control algorithms that adjust power interfaces to achieve the maximum power generation, during variations in irradiation, temperature, and characteristics of the photovoltaic module. En plantas generadoras y en subestaciones se requieren sistemas de puesta a tierra (SPT) espacios... more En plantas generadoras y en subestaciones se requieren sistemas de puesta a tierra (SPT) espaciosos, con configuraciones complejas como parte del sistema de protección contra rayos. Las corrientes provocadas por una descarga atmosférica pueden causar altas tensiones en los cables de señales ubicados cerca de los SPT. Estas tensiones transitorias pueden causar falsas señales, las cuales provocan un mal funcionamiento de la instrumentación electrónica. Determinar medidas de protección contra rayos requiere del conocimiento de la máxima elevación de la tensión entre el SPT y la tierra remota. El presente trabajo propone una metodología para analizar el comportamiento transitorio de redes de tierra. La técnica se basa en considerar los diferentes segmentos de la malla de tierra como elementos de líneas de transmisión. Para desarrollar esta metodología se utilizó el software MATLAB-Simulink. Los resultados se validan por comparación con modelos basados en la teoría del campo electromagnético publicados en la literatura. In generating plants and substations spacious grounding systems with complex configuration as part of the protection system against lighting, are required. The current caused by an atmospheric discharge can cause high voltages in the signal cables located near the grounding systems. These transient voltages may be the reason for the occurrence of false signals, which can cause malfunctioning and of electronic instruments. The knowledge of maximum elevation of voltage between the grounding systems and the remote ground is required to determine protection against lightning. This paper proposes a methodology to analyze the transient behavior of grounding grid. The technique is based on considering the different segments of the ground grid as elements of transmission lines. For modeling the grounding systems behavior in its transient state faster, the MATLAB-Simulink software was used. The results were validated by comparing them with models based on the electromagnetic field theory published in the literature.
